Cannon Dancer - OSMAN" Play Review! The legendary game that caused a stir in arcades 26 years ago is back before us!

Cannon Dancer -OSMAN- is scheduled to be released by ININ Games on April 13, 2023 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. We present a review of its PlayStation4 version!

This game was developed by Mitchell and released by Atlus in 1996 for arcades, and is now being released for home consoles for the first time. At the time, the game was released under the title "Cannon Dancer" in Japan and "OSMAN" outside of Japan, but arcade gamers at the time saw similarities between the game system, action, stage composition, enemy character design, and other aspects of this title and "Strider Hiryu" released by Capcom in 1989. However, arcade gamers at the time said that the game's game system, action, stage configuration, and enemy character design had similarities with "Strider Hiryu" released by Capcom in 1989. That's as it should be. The development of this game was led by the main staff of "Strider Hiryu" including Koichi Yotsui, the producer of "Strider Hiryu".

The player saves the world by controlling the Teki warrior Kirin!

The game is set in the near future in the late 21st century, in a world ruled by the federal government, an evil woman named "Slaver" appears and plunges people into confusion and fear as she plans to take over the world. Fearing the worst, Federal Attorney General Jack Rayson summons the assassin " Kirin " to his office. The story begins as follows.

The player controls " Kirin ", a Tekhi warrior named "Cannon Dancer" who uses his extraordinary physical abilities to fight not only against Slaver and the federal government, but also against other Tekhi warriors, his former compatriots who, for personal reasons, plan to strangle Kirin. The battle is on!

Master the throwing technique! A great killing stroke to spare!

The A button (□) attacks, the B button (×) jumps, the B button (with the stick down) slides, and the C button (△) performs the invincible "Daishajin" move. I remember that the instruction card at the time said "Kirin Hoshi Matsuri (Kirin Star Festival)" instead of "Dai-Slaying Battle," but this ported version says only "Dai-Slaying Battle," so this may be due to a re-translation of the overseas port. The "B" button can be used to perform a throw while jumping or sliding by pressing the B button again at the right moment.

In terms of movement, the player can enjoy acrobatic maneuvers such as climbing walls and grabbing onto ceilings and cliffs.

The "daisy-chain" action has the same effect as a bomb in a shooting game, and is invincible while in use, making it a very useful emergency evasion move. Furthermore, it boasts an offensive power that can take away more than half of a boss's health if it is hit well. On the other hand, the only way to reacquire it during the game is to make a mistake and redo the stage, so at the time I had a hard time deciding how to use it. The game's difficulty level is quite high from stage 1, so it would be a waste to end the game without using up all of the "big kills". When you are in danger, use it sparingly and without hesitation.

The seemingly unassuming "throw" is an extremely useful attack. While under the effect of a throw, the throw is free of hit detection and the thrown enemy has an attack detection, which is useful when surrounded by a group of enemies. Furthermore, if the enemy character is of human size, even the stage boss can be thrown, so be sure to grasp the timing of the throw and use it to your advantage.

In addition to being a complete port of the arcade version, this title also includes a save/load function and the ability to rewind the game by pressing L2 or fast-forward by pressing R2 during play. By making good use of these functions, try to clear the game on your own.

Power up with items!

Capsules marked with "P" are placed in the game, and by destroying them, power-up items will appear. Power-up items come in "red," "yellow," "blue," and "green," with the exception of "red," which is an item that restores your strength. The current power-up status is indicated by the color of his trousers. The color of the pants is initially blue, and changes from purple to red to white to black as items are acquired. At the highest power-up level, the number of afterimages, which can be used as options, is increased to four, and the attack motion is covered with a rainbow-colored aura and the attack range becomes wider. However, the power of the character is reduced when he takes damage, so it is best to try to reach the boss without taking any damage.

Enjoy the eccentric story!

The storyline is so eccentric and develops so quickly that even those who have played this game at the time may not have been able to follow the storyline properly.

Jack Rayson, the federal attorney general who sent the assassin "Kirin" to destroy the "Slaver," an organization bent on world domination, appears from the opening scene wearing only his underpants and, no matter how you look at it, he looks like a bad guy. When he next appears, he is dressed in a black suit and a black fedora hat, and from the very beginning, the storyline is so suspicious that it does not enter my mind at all.

Stage 1 begins in the "Gulf City Gran," and as you advance while dodging the relentless attacks of the enemies, you will fight the stage boss, GAMRAN. It was well known to gamers at the time that if you were okay with taking one hit of damage, you could easily defeat GAMRAN by sliding into his fat ass.

Stage 2 starts from the place where GAMRAN was defeated, and you have to fight the stage boss, HERIO, while being chased by a train running along the wall. The problem is the "train running along the wall! If you don't want to die, run down as fast as you can and fly just in time! The enemy is quite kind in giving me advice. When I succeeded in avoiding the train, it crashed into the wall and flew away, leaving me in a state of confusion as to what it was trying to do.

Then, the train attacks mercilessly, saying, "I will reward you with plenty of kirin for your hard work.

After such a sudden turn of events, Stage 3 begins with the "Flaming Desert of Bahua," in which the scorpion is chained to the ground.

A scorpion breaks the chains, and the player is somehow freed, and after struggling for his life, he descends into an underground cave, where Jack Rayson appears again and says, "Enjoy the resort in hell.

I can't concentrate on the game because there are too many things to nitpick, such as where in the world this person is watching from, and if you have already factored in escape, you don't need to bother tying him up with chains.

After that, I continued to play with the "Teki no Wiryoku," who was a member of the same battle group as me. After that, there were more rapid developments, such as a battle with "Teki no Wyriff," a former classmate of mine in a battle group, and becoming friends with a pirate, and I almost couldn't keep up with my tsukkomi.

You will fight against "Kanonsu," a sibling who has grown up without recovering from his middle age illness, and "Tiernon," the most famous of the enemies, who seems to have had some sort of past relationship with the Kirin.

Playing Warriors with official cheats?

This game has an official cheat function.
From the settings screen, you can select "Invincible Jump," which makes you invincible only while jumping, "Invincible Attack," which makes you invincible while attacking, etc. In addition, from the "Cheat" section, you can select "Invincible," which is exactly what it says, "Unlimited Fatal Attack," which allows you to use a large killing spree without limit, and so on. This makes it easy for those who played the game at the time but were unable to complete it due to the sheer difficulty to play through to the ending.

Of course, it would be fine if you could clear the game by playing normally, but this game was so difficult that at the time, no one in my neighborhood could clear it. For those of you who were also unable to clear the game, I urge you to purchase this game and see with your own eyes the ending that you were unable to see at the time by playing Musou and who the evil woman "Slaver" was who was planning to take over the world.

So, I had a chance to play "Cannon Dancer -OSMAN-", and I was very impressed that 26 years have passed since it first appeared in the arcades, and I never thought I would be able to play "Cannon Dancer" again. Moreover, as a fan who played the game in real time back then, I was able to enjoy playing this highly finished port. This is the first home console port of the classic retro game "Cannon Dancer -OSMAN-," which was highly acclaimed for its speed and fluid character movement. We hope you will take this opportunity to play "Cannon Dancer -OSMAN-," a classic retro game that was highly acclaimed for its speed and fluid character movement.
