Official report of "Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion: Birthday Screening & Live Viewing" held on December 1
Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion" was reborn as a trilogy of theatrical compilation works by reconstructing all 50 episodes of "Lelouch of the Rebellion" and "Lelouch of the Rebellion R2" and adding new postrecording and new cuts to all the episodes. This time, "Happy Birthday Screening & Live Viewing," an event to celebrate Lelouch's birthday (December 5) in grand style, was held at Shinjuku Wald 9 on Saturday, December 1, 2018. After the screening of Part 3, "The Imperial Road," the concluding part of the theater compilation trilogy, Jun Fukuyama, who plays Lelouch, took the stage as a guest. Live viewing was held at 15 movie theaters nationwide, and a valuable talk session that could only be heard here unfolded.
Mr. Taniguchi (Kojiro) from Sunrise moderated the event, looking back over the past 12 years.
The talk started with a story about the audition before "Lelouch of the Rebellion" started broadcasting in October 2006. Mr. Fukuyama said, "I and Mr. Sakurai (Takahiro) both applied for the roles of Lelouch and Suzaku, but I was going to choose Lelouch. He was born with a twisted purity that Fukuyama expressed in his own way.
When asked to lower his voice to play Lelouch, Mr. Fukuyama countered, "I didn't do it that way in the audition..." However, he replied, "The audition is only to see the direction of the play, not to solidify the character or voice there! So please keep your voice low! The audience burst into laughter as he recounted the episode in which director Taniguchi gave him a one-sided criticism, including the tone of his voice. He also recounted an episode in which he was told to lower his voice, including his voice, by Director Taniguchi and two sound directors (Mr. Motoi Izawa and Mr. Yasuo Urakami), who were directing the production. Mr. Urakami told me to 'become a demon' while looking me in the eye, and I was constantly under the geas of the three of them (laughs).
He also recalled the days of the recording sessions for the TV series, which were a series of trials and tribulations. The director Taniguchi's personality from Mr. Fukuyama's point of view emerged three-dimensionally in a series of hilarious episodes, including an allegation that he had prepared setting materials with all details at the recording site.
The next topic of discussion was the trilogy of theatrical compilation films with all new postrecording, which was announced at the 10th anniversary event "Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion: Kiseki no Anniversary" held in November 2016. During the recording of the second part, "Rebellion", Mr. Fukuyama felt discomfort in his throat, and for the first time, he personally announced the cancellation of the recording of Lelouch, saying "I can only do this much today". Mr. Fukuyama also talked about the differences from the TV series, such as how Lelouch's appearance changed when the daily life at Ashford Academy was no longer portrayed, and the difficulties of recording the story in a different flow due to the re-editing. To wrap up the "Happy Birthday Screening & Live Viewing," all the guests and audience sang a birthday song together for Lelouch, whose birthday is on December 5. Mr. Fukuyama received a bouquet of flowers on Lelouch's behalf, and the audience applauded in celebration.
As the successful talk show neared its end, the second trailer for the completely new movie "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection," which will be released on February 9, 2019 (Saturday), was shown on the screen to excited applause.
The "Code Geass" series, which Mr. Fukuyama describes as "the work that changed my life as a voice actor. In closing, Mr. Fukuyama said, "As usual, this work doesn't tell me many things, so there are many things I don't understand either. Because I still don't have the credits (laughs), but the title is "Lelouch of Resurrection," so I hope you can see what and how it will be resurrected. There are only 10 weeks left until the release of the film, and I hope you will come to the theater on February 9," he summarized, bringing the "Happy Birthday Screening & Live Viewing" of Lelouch, which was celebrated by many fans, to a close.
