Today is Father's Day] "The Daughter Who Went Out to the Capital to Become an Adventurer Became an S Rank" to be animated in the fall of 2023! Saori Hayami, who plays Angeline, talks about her father's memories
A TV anime adaptation of "The Daughter Who Went Out to the Capital to Become an Adventurer and Became an S Rank" (written by Kakiya Monji, illustrated by toi8), published by Earth Star Novels, is now available!
The story begins when former adventurer Belgriff (CV. Junichi Suwabe) returns to his home village and raises a girl abandoned in the forest as his own daughter. Eventually, the grown-up daughter Angeline leaves for the capital, and five years later, she has become an S rank adventurer, the highest rank in ...... this work.
In addition to the fantasy world and battle elements, it is also a heartwarming fantasy that depicts the bond between father and daughter through Angeline's love for her father.
This time, we conducted a special Father's Day interview. We asked Saori Hayami, who plays Angeline, to talk not only about the film but also about her father.
I've loved my father since I was a child, so I could relate to him.
Q: What was your impression when you read the original story, "The daughter who left the capital to become an adventurer became an S-ranked adventurer.
Hayami: I thought the story of the father and daughter, which is the core of the story, was interesting. I read the story from Angeline's point of view, and I knew that they have a special relationship. There are many things I can't tell you yet, so I'm afraid my answer is a bit vague, but I thought the bond between father and daughter, who always think of each other even when they are apart, was very warm and wonderful. In addition to the father and daughter, many other things happen along the way in this adventure story. Each one is different from the next, and the characters are full of personality each time, so I think you will never get tired of watching this adventure story.
Q: I really enjoyed the fact that the story is like an authentic adventure tale and doesn't try to be strange.
Hayami: Indeed. It is not too grotesque and has a warmth to it. So you may feel comfortable watching it.
Q: She loves her father, but I thought it was also amazing that she could make the decision to go to the capital to become an adventurer because she admires his backbone.
Hayami: She is a strong girl and has a strong core. If only she had such a kind father, she would stay here forever! (laughs).
Angeline.
How was it playing Angeline? Are there some things you can relate to?
Hayami: Angelin's face is completely different only when she is talking about her father (laughs). (Laughs.) Even the drawings are different, and sometimes she looks deformed like a mascot.
There are also gag-like expressions, and many facial expressions that are never shown when they are fighting are only shown when they are talking about their fathers. The richness of her facial expressions was one of the things I was looking forward to during the postrecording, trying to figure out how to act and how much fun I could have with her. That's part of her charm and part of what I like about her.
As for being close to myself, I can sympathize with her because I have been a daddy's girl since I was a child, and I have been since the time of my audition. I understand! I understand! I was thinking "I get it! But not as much as Angeline (laughs).
Q: Did you have any kind of rebellious period?
Hayami: Not really, but one thing I remember is that when I was in elementary school, my father was teaching me how to study something. But the test results in that subject did not go well, and I was like, "That's enough! I remember we had a fight. Looking back, I think what he was saying was right, and he was teaching me properly, but I rebelled against him because it was a subject I wasn't good at.
Q: That may have been a common exchange in everyday life (laughs).
Hayami: Of course, I think there were many more things. There may have been a time when we were at odds with each other, but I don't remember much (laughs).
But sometimes when we would make up, I would receive a letter from my father. The letter was not on letterhead, but when I took my Y-shirt to the dry cleaners, there would be a piece of cardboard to keep it in shape, and he would write a message on the blank piece of paper with a pen. My father often left the house before me, so there were times when he would leave it quietly on my desk.
Nowadays, it might be on line or something like that, but that would be nice too. So he was not a father who stayed at home for a long time?
Hayami: That's right. He had business trips and was very busy, so we may have been distant from each other. In my family, my father and mother are the opposite types, and my father appears to be serious at first glance. In fact, I think he is serious, a workaholic, and solid in his way of life, but he also has a little bit of a loose end, and I find that cute (laughs).
Berggriff.
So, how do you like a father like Berggriff?
Hayami: He is good! He is mentally big, and the way he treats his daughter is very nice. He not only spoils her but also gives her strict advice, but he doesn't teach her too much. She values the importance of self-discovery. But if you ask him for help, he will help you, so I think he is an amazing person.
Q: Everything is done with the other person in mind, isn't it?
Hayami: That's right! That's why it is rare that he says such harsh things.
Hayami: I think that in some ways he is stern because he is an adventurer who lives side by side with death in a world that is different from the one we live in today.
Hayami: Just the fact that Mr. Berglikh used to be an adventurer hides many episodes, and that's one of the things that makes us curious about him!
Hayami: Looking at the character design, there is one leg missing.
Hayami: I wonder what happened in the past. As an adventurer, you have a party, so I want you to imagine what kind of friends you had.
Q: You said that Angeline gets excited when it comes to her father. Did you sit in with Junichi Suwabe, who plays Berkleif, at the recording studio?
Hayami: We sometimes entered the studio at the same time. There were two separate recording booths, one with microphones for four people and a smaller room for one person. At that time, Mr. Suwabe was often in the small room, so I really understood Angeline's desire to see her father (laughs). I could hear his voice all the time in real time. So when I left the booth, I was like, "Father! when I left the booth (laughs).
(laughs). So you were able to recreate the distance between the two of them during the recording. I wonder how Mr. Suwabe listened to the father-loving lines.
Hayami: I wonder how it went (laughs). (Laughs) I think he heard our booth conversation. But in the reminiscence scene of my childhood, I could hear my father's voice and we were able to communicate with each other, so I was determined not to miss a single millimeter of what I was hearing! I was acting with the feeling of "I won't miss a single millimeter of the voice coming out of my ears!
Q: Recently, have you been able to do postrecording with a large group?
Hayami: In the latter half of the production, there were times when there were more than four people in the large room, so we did some microphone work. It was the first time in a long time for us to do postrecording with a large number of people, so we had to explore a lot. We were doing it while saying, "I don't get it, do you?
We had one microphone for each of us during the Corona disaster. What would you say are the highlights of the early part of the anime, other than your father's favorite, Angeline?
Hayami: I think the action scenes are one of the highlights! Angeline is very strong and has a cool fighting style. It's a small detail, but the way he improvises in the battle scenes, it's like he's not being pushed at all, or he's fighting with a lot of leeway, so I often put in my ad-libs with an unflappable feeling.
The dialogue was cool and unaffected, which was refreshing to me as a performer. I think it will be a highlight to see how her relationship with her father will change when Angeline goes to the capital.
Q: "S-rank" must be quite strong.
Hayami: He is the highest rank, so I think he is quite rare and very strong!
Q: The other characters also have their charms, don't they?
Hayami: There are characters that are familiar to Angeline, and there are also characters that we meet during our adventures, but they all have completely different atmospheres, so please look forward to the personalities of the various characters.
Did you enjoy the recording sessions with the party members in a friendly atmosphere?
Hayami: Yes. It was fun. Angelin also shows a frank expression to her friends, and there are scenes where she teases and is teased, and we were able to record the ad-libs together as the conversation flowed, so we had a lot of fun.
Q: I would like to have a little keyword talk here. Do you have any ability that you would like to rank S?
Hayami I wonder what it is. ...... S rank is pretty amazing. If you could be at the guru level, would it be memory? If my memory were S rank, all tests would be a piece of cake. If I had that when I was in school, I could have used my time for much more fun things. With tests and such, I was more of an overnight person. Looking back now, I think there were more fun ways to learn, but there were a lot of assignments to memorize when I was a student, so I was like ...... doing what I had to memorize every day.
Q: By the way, is it better to memorize scripts and such?
Hayami I wonder. I think it is better to remember the general flow of the performance.
Q: And then there are memories that you don't want to forget, but you forget.
Hayami: Indeed! There are memories that you don't want to forget. Memories of conversations with someone are one such example. I hope I don't forget the conversation I had with someone at that time. But there are also memories that I want to forget, such as sad memories, so I would like to make it like a trigger (laughs). (Laughs.) Like, if I activate my ability, I can remember.
That might be a good idea! Next, in reference to "adventure," if you had a summer vacation, where would you like to travel (adventure)?
Hayami: I feel that many people are going abroad this year, so I would like to go abroad if I had the chance. I would like to take a slightly longer summer vacation and go to the U.S. or Hawaii, just for the heck of it. I would also like to go to Northern Europe. I think I would need a longer vacation to go to Scandinavia, though.
Q: Since you are also an artist, traveling is a good way to get input from your work.
Hayami: Yes, it is. It is also a good way to refresh yourself and clear your mind. I am not the type of person who goes abroad very often, so the number of times I have been abroad is quite small, but if I have a summer vacation, I would like to go abroad.
Q: Lastly, since the interview was released on Father's Day, could you give a message to all the fathers in Japan?
Hayami: To all the fathers in the country! (Laughs) Well, ...... this story is about the bond between a father and his child, so I think there are probably various points that will stick with you. So I hope you will enjoy this story from a father's point of view as well. I often talked about this with the staff during recording sessions, and I think that the story of Belgriff is also very important. I hope that you will see this film as the story of my father.
