TGS 2023 Special Edition] "Fate/Samurai remunant" Play Report! Enjoy the battle to the death with Koo Hoo Ling and other Servants [TGS2023 Special Edition]!
Tokyo Game Show 2023 is being held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, from September 21 to 24, 2023.
Although the scale of the show had been reduced since 2019 due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus, this year, for the first time in four years, all of Makuhari Messe, from Halls 1 to 11, the Event Hall, and the International Conference Hall, is being used for the show, and all of Makuhari Messe is being colored by games.
In this article, we will report on the "Fate/Samurai remunant" that we were able to try out at the Koei Tecmo Games booth.
A challenging tag-team battle with heroic spirits!
Fate/Samurai remunant" is a new game in the "Fate" series in which heroes and gods from the past and present appear as "Servants" and fight together with their masters who use them in fierce battles. The story is set in Edo in the 4th year of Keio, where seven pairs of Masters and Servants gather to kill each other until the last pair is eliminated in a "waxing moon ceremony.
In this trial, there are two modes to choose from. The first, "Hana to Hariyuke, Nogure Futari," focuses on exploration, while the second, "Kakka ni Myself to Kakusu Hito," offers challenging battles between Masters and Servants. I chose the latter.
The player controls the main character, Master Iori Miyamoto, and his Servant "Saber," as well as Koo Hulin, the "Servant of Deviance. They are pitted against a man named Jiemon and Lancer. There was no tutorial, and the battle began immediately. Attacks are based on combos using the □ and △ buttons. In addition, the main character can use several types, including the "Ji-no-Kata," which excels in defense. By switching from one type to another depending on the characteristics of the opponent, the player is able to handle any situation.
In the early stages of the battle, he tried targeting Lancer, a Servant, for practice, but he did no damage. The attacks of the human hero are basically ineffective against Servants, and damage can only be dealt by breaking the "outer shell" using the "Resonance Zetsu-jutsu," which is a technique used in conjunction with an allied Servant. The "Kyosei Zetsu-jutsu" requires the consumption of a special gauge, which accumulates each time the protagonist attacks an enemy.
In this work, it is also possible to temporarily control a Servant in battle. If the Servant is a Servant, damage can be dealt to Lancer, ignoring the outer shell. However, the amount of time that Servants can be manipulated is limited, so care should be taken when using it. In fact, when I used it on Saber and Koo Hulin, it did quite a bit of damage against Lancer, so it is best to use it aggressively by finding the right moment.
On the other hand, even the main character was able to deal damage to the master Jiemon, and Lancer was temporarily weakened when his strength was cut down. At first we thought that we would win by destroying the Master, but it appears that we must defeat the Servant. After temporarily incapacitating the Master, it seems that the important pattern is to attack the weakened Servant intensively.
Although they were fighting while using recovery items as needed, Lancer, with his caustic attacks and high defense, is a very strong enemy. Furthermore, the coordinated attacks by Jiemon and Lancer were also troublesome, and we had a tough fight to the end.
As a result, the game was over when more than 90% of Lancer's strength had been reduced. At this point, we had less than one minute left in the game, so we gave it one last chance, but in the end we were unable to win the battle. However, the battles in this game are not only about the coordination between Master and Servant, but also about strategy, such as which Servant to attack first. This game balance should not change significantly when playing the full version.
The game we played this time, "The One Who Crashes Down Into the Fire," is quite challenging, so if you want to clear the game without fail, it would be better to study the operation methods and techniques beforehand. We hope that readers will do their best to win the game.
