The synopsis of the episode and the preceding scene cuttings are as follows.
Episode 1 "Immortality and Bad Luck
Kazeko Izumo is a girl with the power of unluckiness, which brings about unfortunate accidents to those who touch her.
She is prepared to die because of her unique constitution, but an undead man appears in front of her with an "immortal" body that can never die.
He takes Kazeko away in order to use her power to achieve "true death," but the "Union," an organization that controls unidentified phenomena and pursues "deniers" with abilities like Kazeko's, also has their sights set on the two. However, the "Union," an organization that controls unidentified phenomena and pursues "deniers" with abilities like theirs, is also after the two.
Yuichi Nakamura (who plays Andy) and Moe Kahara (who plays Kazeko Izumo) have arrived for their official interviews!
Official interviews with Yuichi Nakamura (who plays Andy) and Moe Kahara (who plays Kazeko Izumo), who play the main characters, have been released. They talk a lot about their impressions of this work, their impressions of the unique characters, and their impressions of playing the characters.
--Nakamura: Please give us your impression of the original manga "Undead Unluck," which is currently serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump.
Nakamura: It is a very powerful work and moves at a good pace, and I thought the characters were very lively. In the beginning of the story, Andy is depicted as a fighter who attacks by detaching body parts and using the shock of their regeneration, but as the work progresses, a science fiction element is added to his abilities. The increasing IQ of the work was the part that changed my impression as I read it.
Kahara: My first impression was that the pace was good, and I found myself reading quite a bit. When I read it again, I realized that there were many things I noticed in the work. There was a lot of foreshadowing, and the setting was very well thought out. And the further the story progresses, the more fascinating the characters become, so I hope that this anime will be a good opportunity for those who have read the original work to go back and read it again.
--The characters are unique, but what is your impression of the character you are playing?
Nakamura: I think Andy is the character that drives the powerful and fast-paced atmosphere that has been present since the beginning of this work, and he is the one who is driving the story forward. However, as the story progresses, you realize that he is apparently not a one-dimensional character. He is not only bold and rough, but also has a sensitive side, which I felt makes him more interesting as a character. In this work, the undead are immortal. In some works, undead refers to zombies, but Andy is not like that; he regenerates himself and remains young. That is the unique character of this work, and it is interesting to fight a battle using that ability. But it's tough because it seems that even if you detach the body, there is still pain (laughs).
Kahara: At first, I thought Kazeko would have a heroine-like atmosphere, with Andy pulling her along, but she has a strong core and heart that is typical of a hero. I also think that she is a character who can influence those around her, and there are so many characters who are able to take a step forward or change by being involved with Kazeko, so I think that is one of her charms. But how could a girl who is arguably the kindest person I have ever met have, of all people, the ability to unluckily bring bad luck to those she touches? I thought. And I thought it was cruel that the more she liked them, the more she would bring them bad luck. However, she is so strong and cool that you don't feel that!
--What were you conscious of when you played the role?
Nakamura: In the first few episodes, I was careful to be bold. That is Andy's characteristic. Also, what was often inserted was a smirking expression. I was careful to express that kind of expression, and I thought I had to act in a way that the character could be grasped with a single voice.
Kahara:To be honest, there is nothing I am conscious of when playing Kazeko. I don't make up my voice, and I play it honestly. Even so, since I have to show various expressions, I was hoping that I could show a different Kazeko-chan to Andy, whom I would come to like later on.
--Please tell us your impressions of the dialogue between the two.
Kahara: Andy definitely expressed his cool side, so it was easy for me to sympathize with Kazeko's cute expression. (After we were able to record together in the same booth (instead of dispersed recording), it felt more like he was delivering his words directly to me, so I naturally felt that he was pulling me up through his play, too, as Kazeko. I felt that because Andy was Andy, I could also be Kazeko.
Nakamura:I think the young actors of today, including Mr. Kahara, have good intuition, or they are quick enough to guess what is going on, and I think that was one of the reasons the recording went smoothly. I think that her performance made the character of Kazeko even more wonderful. However, during the actual recording, I was not listening to her with that much consideration. I was repeatedly thinking about how to respond to what she was saying through reflection, so I think that only when you see the finished video will you be able to feel how we play off of each other.
--Please tell us about your favorite characters.
Nakamura:All of the characters are interesting, but Gina was quite an important character and had an impressive way of appearing. I think it is a good episode because it is also a part that touches on Andy's own past. I feel like she is my favorite character, including her character's relationship value.
Kahara: I have always liked Billy and he is my personal favorite. I think he is "nice" including the visual atmosphere. Rikiya Koyama plays the role, and it's great! I just read the main JUMP magazine. But I'm also reading the main Jump magazine, and lately I've been liking Nico. There are so many fascinating characters that I can't narrow it down, and the interactions between them are interesting, so I hope everyone will find their own favorite!
--What are your impressions of the video?
Nakamura: What I thought was unique to the anime was the scene at the beginning of the movie where Kazuko is reading the girls' manga "Kimi ni Denwaare". That scene was expanded and made into an anime. Moreover, the design and direction are different from the main story, and the staff is also different. I felt like I was watching a different anime, so I felt like I was getting a good deal (laughs).
Kahara: The sound was added, and it was very powerful. Also, Kazeko's eyes were carefully drawn in many of the cuts, which I thought was great. I thought the sparkling eyes were very shoujo manga-like. The story is interesting as a prerequisite, but I would like you to pay attention to that aspect as well, because it was expressed in a way that only anime can do.
--Please give a message to those who are looking forward to the work.
Nakamura: For those who have read the original work, I feel that the animation will be delivered in a very good way. The animation is carefully done and the order of scenes is changed when it is necessary for dramatic effect, but the important lines are not deleted and are used as they are, so I feel that the staff, including the director, respects the original work. For those who started with the anime, I hope you will enjoy the original work as well, as it retains the same groove and tension that you felt in the anime. However, in the case of the manga, the reader is free to set the tempo, but in the case of the anime, the tempo is set by us, so I think your impression will be different. So I would be happy if you could enjoy both.
Kahara: I think that those who originally read the manga have been looking forward to the anime since its announcement until its broadcast. I am sure that if you keep that feeling and watch the first episode, you will be satisfied. And for those of you who are experiencing the anime for the first time, I hope that you will fall in love with the world of "Undead Unluck". It is filled with unique settings and character atmospheres, so I hope that many people will like both the anime and manga together.
