The live-action film "Golden Kamuy," scheduled for release on January 19, 2024 (Friday), has released new casting information, a poster, and a trailer.

Based on the popular manga by Satoru Noda, which won the 22nd Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award "Manga Grand Prize" and was published in "Weekly Young Jump" until April 2022. The story takes place in Hokkaido at the end of the Meiji period, just after the end of the Russo-Japanese War, and depicts battles over the vast Ainu reserves, hunting, gourmet food, and other aspects of Ainu culture. The live-action film adaptation was announced in the comic strip in the 29th volume of the comics released on April 19, 2022, attracting much attention.

The cast of "Golden Kamui" includes the childhood friend of Saichi Sugimoto, Umeko, and Toraji!

The role of Umeko, Sugimoto's childhood friend played by Kento Yamazaki, will be played by Mitsuki Takahata, who co-starred with Yamazaki in the 2020 film "Otaku ni Koi wa Hanaku" (It's Hard to Love an Otaku). Yamazaki and Takahata, who played an otaku couple with their breathtaking chemistry, play two childhood friends whose fates are at each other's throats in this film.
Yuki Izumisawa plays Toraji, a childhood friend of Sugimoto and Umeko who goes with Sugimoto to the battlefield at the 203 plateau. Although this is the first time he and Mr. Yamazaki have worked together, his passionate performance in a scene that evokes the strong friendship between Sugimoto and Toraji is a highlight of the film. The two important characters, who are essential to the backbone of Sugimoto, are played by some of the most talented young actors in the Japanese film industry.

The production team commented on the casting of the two actors: "Since they play important roles that give us insight into Sugimoto's past, we cast them for their acting ability, which can instantly change the atmosphere of the film. For Umeko, we offered Ms. Takahata the role of a woman who does not say much but has a range of integrity, gravity, and fragility, and for Toraji, we offered Mr. Izumisawa the role of a man who is naturally at Sugimoto's side, but whose performance is sure to stir the emotions of the viewers. The first day of filming was the first day for the three of us to shoot a scene together, but the shooting proceeded in a friendly mood, as if we had been spending all day together. I vividly remember that I felt a strong response to the filming," he said.
