Exhilarating and addictive! Review of "Roboquest," a new high-speed robot FPS with roguelite elements!
How are you doing, Akiba Research Institute readers? This is Nero Hyakkabe, a writer who buys too many games. I'd like to ask you all, do you like robots? Even if you are not a fan of games or anime, the mere sound of the word "robot" makes you feel romantic.
The setting is the future of the 28th century. Become a "Guardian," an old-fashioned guard robot, and bring back hope to mankind!
As the name suggests, "Roboquest" is a game in which robots are the main characters. The game is an action shooter that unfolds from a first-person perspective, in the so-called FPS style, allowing players to enjoy an immersive and fast-paced play experience. The title also includes a "rogue light" system with multiple elements of randomness, which allows the player to enjoy a different development each time they play.
The setting of this title is the future world of the 28th century. Humanity is scattered in the devastated desert, struggling to make ends meet. Then, a young scavenger girl named "MAX" accidentally discovers an old-fashioned guard robot named "Guardian" buried in the sand. MAX, who thought, "If we join forces with Guardian, we may be able to bring hope to mankind," reactivated Guardian and began to explore the mysterious canyon. ...... is the story of this film. The cinematic setting, set in a devastated future, and the comic book-style direction that embellishes the story will thrill players whether they like it or not.
The player controls "Guardian," an old-fashioned escort robot. The basic objective of the game is to advance through the stages, destroying enemies while making full use of a variety of weapons. The game is played from the first-person perspective of the "Guardian," and the high speed and exhilarating controls combine to create an immersive experience in which the player feels as if he or she has become a robot.
However, although the game is about robots, the worldview and visuals of the game are not mere science fiction, but rather comic-style and toon-style graphics, giving the impression that the game is designed to allow any player, regardless of gender or age, to enter the game world.
Huxla lovers will also be very satisfied! Kick enemies to the curb with a wide variety of weapons!
There are two main attack methods in "Guardian": long-range and melee. As the name suggests, melee attacks are a way to attack nearby enemies, and there are two types: bash them or jump and stomp on their heads. It seems quite rare to have a "stomp attack" in this type of FPS title. While it is fresh and interesting, it may be difficult to get used to the first-person viewpoint.
The main dish of this title is long-range attacks with weapons.
There is a wide variety of weapons in the game, including the orthodox weapons familiar in FPS such as handguns and machine guns, as well as two pistols, grenade launchers, bomb-like weapons, and so on. Each weapon has its own damage capacity, rate of fire, and attack range, and some weapons have special effects such as "bullets explode" or "bullets track enemies. It is fun to try out the various weapons.
These various weapons are basically found on the way through the stages, and are picked up and equipped. However, not all the weapons you find can be equipped, and you can have only two. Weapons are also rated by rarity, so it is part of the fun of this game to rack your brains over which weapon to adopt (see ......). This feeling is similar to that of playing a "hack and slash" game, and I think that not only FPS fans but also hack and slash fans will find this game addictive.
It is common knowledge that ammunition management is important when it comes to FPS weapons, but this game has no concept of remaining ammunition and allows unlimited use of ammunition. Although there is a limit to the number of ammunition loaded in each weapon, so reloading action is required, I felt that this drastic setting of "unlimited ammunition" is an important element that makes this title a nonstressful and exhilarating experience to play.
The game is also full of growth elements, such as levels and permanent upgrades, which make the game very challenging to play!
Apart from weapon attacks, the main character can also use abilities. For example, the "Bastion" ability makes the player invincible for a short period of time. While extremely powerful, these abilities require batteries, which are rapidly depleted as they are used, so it is important to activate them in a planned manner. However, the battery is automatically recharged over time, so it can be used as many times as necessary as long as it recovers. Like the "infinite ammunition" setting for bullets, I felt that the battery system for abilities was also a good setting that did not detract from the exhilarating gameplay of this title.
In addition, this title has RPG-like concepts such as experience values and levels.
The game is structured in such a way that players collect experience values dropped by defeated enemies, and when they accumulate a certain amount of experience values, their levels increase, and they acquire ever-present abilities called "perks". The perk system is also an interesting and "swampy" element of this title. There are a variety of perks, such as one that automatically throws grenades over time, or one that allows you to damage surrounding enemies while deploying the "Bastion" ability, so there are many different effects. or you may just go with your gut and choose the one that you feel is the strongest.
In this game, which uses a rogue light system, if you keep taking damage and your HP runs out, your run (stage) will end and all the weapons and perks you have acquired will be lost.
The basic style of roguelite games is to repeat the challenge again from nothing (......). However, in this game, there is a "wrench" item that is not lost even after the run ends, and this item can be used to release permanent upgrades. This is the "wrench" item that is not lost when a run ends. In other words, to put it simply, the more you play and the harder you play, the stronger you will surely become. In this game, where enemy attacks are fierce and the difficulty level is rather high, this permanent upgrade element is not only the key to success, but also serves as a motivation for players to keep playing.
Although I mentioned that the difficulty level is high, the game has a difficulty setting function that can be changed at any time during the game from the base. If you set it to "easy," the enemies will be weakened, so even FPS beginners and players who are not confident in their action game skills will be able to enjoy the game without any difficulty. Furthermore, this game supports multiplayer, so it is recommended that you and your friends get together and play together to conquer the game.
Roboquest" is a FPS x Rogue Lite x Huxla that is sure to get you hooked!
So, that's my introduction of "Roboquest".
Roboquest" is an addictive game that combines the speedy and exhilarating FPS element, the roguelite element, which develops differently each time you play, and the Huxla element, where you have to choose the right weapons. It is a title that we recommend as a companion for long autumn nights. If you are interested in this title, please check it out.
