Neither udon nor ramen? Curry men using pasta noodles! Curry Men Kyo Misato" Curry Men (with rice in broth) 1,000 yen!
When you come to Akihabara, you may have a hard time deciding where to have lunch.
To help you decide, here are some Akiba eats that I, Shun Gori, who is always roaming around Akihabara even when I don't have any plans to visit, recommend.
As an Akibaite who prefers to spend his money on his hobbies, I will focus on those who can eat for less than 1,000 yen, assuming that the amount of money you can spend for lunch is within 1,000 yen.
Now, let's think about what to eat in Akiba.
This year, even in December, the days are still warm during the daytime, but the mornings and evenings are often cold, and the difference in temperature tends to take away one's physical strength.
At times like this, I prefer to eat curry with plenty of spices rather than thick ramen noodles. However, is just eating curry as an ordinary Akiba meal not enough punch? After much deliberation, we decided to visit "Curry Men Misato," which claims to offer "a new sensation of spice, noodles, and rice.
Opened in September 2021, Curry Men Kyo Misato is a lunch-only restaurant, and at night it is a reservation-only theater-style pasta course called "fileja. It is located about a four-minute walk from the Showa-dori exit of JR Akihabara Station, on Showa-dori toward Kanda, and a one-minute walk from Iwamotocho Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line.
The restaurant is spacious, with 12 seats at six tables in addition to seven seats at the counter. The interior has a stylish atmosphere with a concrete floor, making it a restaurant that even women can casually enter.
The main menu consists of two types of menus: the "Spiced Curry Men Set" and the "Keema Mixed Noodle Set," as well as the "Aigake Curry," which offers both, and the "Petit Set," which includes a half portion of noodles for those who eat small portions.
Each menu item can be ordered in large portions at no extra charge, so those who want to eat with gusto should increase their portions.
I ordered the "Curry Men with soup stock and rice" for 1,000 yen.
This is the Keema Mixed Men. Although not shown in the picture, it comes with dashi gohan (rice topped with soup stock) for 1,000 yen, as does the Curry Men. The photo shows a normal serving of both men.
The noodles are wide pasta noodles and are chewy and elastic, making them very satisfying. On top of the noodles is cream, which is melted into the curry sauce as you eat.
The curry sauce is an authentic curry made with more than dozens of spices, so it is delicious enough on its own, but when it is combined with the cream and drizzled over the wide noodles, the deliciousness of the curry explodes when you put the noodles in your mouth.
The large, well-seasoned chicken meat in this dish is sure to leave you feeling satisfied.
The "dashi gohan" is what we call "kayaku gohan" in the Kansai region, and is made of 15-grain rice seasoned with bonito broth.
It is soaked in dashi broth and is delicious on its own, but it can also be enjoyed as curry rice by adding it to the leftover sauce after the curry men are finished. It is also excellent.
Each table is equipped with a spice called "Hikapinku Ichimi" (a spice formerly sold at Shibuya 109).
This spice is made by Hikapuku, a charismatic former sales clerk at Shibuya 109, and Mukai Chinmindo, a long-established spice company. Curry Men" is spicy, but not too hot, so those who think curry should be spicy should try a dash of this. Shun Gori loves spicy food, so he tried two dabs and found that his pores all over his face were open and he was drenched in sweat after the meal.
Incidentally, "Hikapinku Ichimi" can be purchased for 700 yen per can. Needless to say, I bought it and went home.
This time, I visited Currymen Misato, which claims to offer "a new sensation of spice, noodles, and rice.
When I heard "Curry Men," I imagined curry ramen, but it was not that simple. Combined with kayaku (dried bonito soup stock) rice, it was a multinational dish involving Italian, Indian, and Japanese cuisines. Thanks to the chef's skillful harmonization of the three distinct tastes, we were able to enjoy a very tasty "new sensation.
It is a stylish restaurant that can be used not only for an everyday lunch, but also for an Akiba date, so why not try "Curry Men Kyo (Misato)" on such occasions?
