EDIFIER GX05 low latency wireless earbuds for gaming - Review! Voice calls on your phone while gaming on your PC!

On November 13, 2023, audio brand EDIFIER released the GX05 gaming wireless earphones.

This product is designed for smartphone calls while playing games on a PC, and features a "dual wireless mode" that allows audio from both the PC and smartphone to be captured in a single pair of earphones. The "dual connection function" that has become popular in wireless earphones in recent years allows two devices to be connected via Bluetooth at the same time, but this does not mean that audio from both devices can be sent to the earphones at the same time. In the case of the GX05, however, it is possible to play audio from two connected devices at the same time. Moreover, there is almost no audio delay, which is important for gaming devices.

Now that we have received the actual product from the manufacturer, let's give it a try.

Voice call on a smartphone while playing a game on a PC

Very large and heavy plastic outer box

The first thing that strikes you when you take the GX05 out of the box is its impressive case.

The plastic outer box is large and heavy, and when you open it, you will find a metal case that doubles as a charger. The case has a rather special design, with a three-pronged top lid that is opened by rotating it clockwise.

Inside are the left and right earphones and a USB dongle receiver that uses 2.4GHz radio waves. The earphones connect to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, and to a PC or game console via the dongle.

The charging case houses the left and right earphones and the 2.4GHz dongle

So what exactly can the dual wireless mode of this device do?

For example, when playing PC games with many people, there has been a clear increase in the number of people using "Discord" as a chat tool recently. This is because it is possible to have a normal voice call while playing a game. However, there are some people who do not have a Discord account and use Discord exclusively for voice calls. However, there are many people who do not have a Discord account, but use a messenger app on their smartphone exclusively for voice calls. For these people, this product is convenient because they can listen to both the sound of the game and the voice of their smartphone at the same time.

The top lid of the charging case is trident-shaped. It can be opened by turning it clockwise.

The use of this product will be even more extensive if you are using a game console such as the PS5 or Nintendo Switch instead of a PC game. For example, if you are playing a network game on the Switch and talking with your friends on your smartphone, this device will allow you to concentrate on the game and still be able to communicate with them.

Playing the World War I FPS "Verdun

First, let's try this device in a PC game.

This time, I chose the FPS game "Verdun". The game is set on the Western Front of World War I. No background music is played during the game except for the initial selection screen. On the battlefield, only the sounds of gunshots, shells, and soldiers' screams are heard, almost piercing the eardrums.

This is a rather perfect title for a review of such gaming earphones, as it realistically recreates a real battlefield that can only be described as tragic.

While playing "Verdun," I tried calling a friend on LINE on my phone, inserting the GX05 dongle into the USB Type-C port of my PC and connecting to my phone via Bluetooth, and was able to talk to my friend even when shells were exploding nearby. If you turn down the volume a little, you can hear your friend's voice even clearer. This clarity is probably due to the dual-microphone noise canceling feature built into the GX05.

Note that the GX05 uses ultra-low latency technology of 15ms, but because it uses 2.4GHz radio waves instead of Bluetooth, we certainly did not notice any sound delay during play. in FPS, if sound and movement are out of sync, it is not a game, and that is why we still use wireless For this reason, many players still use wired earphones or headphones instead of wireless ones. However, with the "GX05," such a weakness of the wireless type is not felt.

Playing the Pokémon MOBA "Pokémon Unite (Nintendo Switch version)

Next, we tested the Pokémon Unite MOBA on the Nintendo Switch, assuming that we would be using a home video game console.

Although "Pokémon Unite" has its own voice chat function, we turned off the voice chat function of "Pokémon Unite" and used LINE on our smartphone to talk with friends instead.

As with "Verdun," we inserted the GX05 dongle into the Switch's USB Type-C port and connected it to the smartphone via Bluetooth. In this way, audio from both the Switch and the smartphone can be imported into the GX05.

As it turns out, even with this usage, the calls were clear and I felt no audio delay at all; even in MOBAs, where audio delay is not as severe as in FPS, I was able to enjoy conversations with friends in clear audio with no delay, just as if I were using voice chat.

Unique device that allows voice calls on your phone during gameplay

Typical use is to connect the 2.4GHz dongle to a PC or other hardware and the earphones to a smartphone via Bluetooth

Thus, this device allows users to enjoy game sound from a PC or game console and voice calls on a smartphone or other device at the same time, but one thing that must be said is that it is not possible to listen to music on a smartphone while playing a game on a device with a 2.4GHz dongle inserted.

I activated "Apple Music" and "YouTube Music" on the author's iPhone, but during game play, game sound takes precedence and no music is heard at all. Of course, if the PC game is interrupted, the earphones can be used as earphones for listening to music.

The continuous playback time of the device is 4.5 hours for the earphones alone, and 16 hours including the charging of the case. The case is large, so it is not suitable for carrying around, but the battery life should be sufficient for gaming earphones.
