Chikyugi" (theme song of "How Do You Live?") / Genji Yonezu
Deguchi: Next, I'd like to talk about the anime songs that I thought would be in the theatrical works of 2023! The next anime song I thought was "Globe" from "How Are You Living? There were a lot of great works in 2023, so I thought any of them would be the face of the year, but "How Are You Living?" was a big one in terms of the framework of anime works, and it seemed to reflect the driving force or the most fundamental part of the creator's ego in the work itself. I went to see it myself.
Samejima I went to see it, but I had no idea what it meant. But I kept watching (laughs).
Deguchi: Ego may be a misleading word, but the sheer magnitude of it is like the author's cry, "I'm going to live with this! The title of the book is a paradoxical one, "How will you live? The title of the song is a paradoxical question, "How do you live?
Samejima It doesn't have many notes.
Deguchi: But what you are saying is very essential, such as "turning the globe seems to go around the same place, but once you go around, it becomes a different world. I think this song has the essential part of what it means to create something, like the karma of a creator. What is interesting is that many of Yonezu Genji's songs have strange chord progressions and hook-laden melodies that are not easy to follow, but this song has almost no such gimmicks. The lack of ornamentation makes the melody stand out.
Samejima It definitely has a raw feel to it.
Deguchi Also, if you listen to it with proper earphones or at a high volume, you can hear the creaking of the chairs, which makes you feel like you are in a very small world with someone singing next to you. It is interpreted in various ways, such as the creaking sound of Hayao Miyazaki's chair when he was drawing a storyboard, or the sound of Yonezu when he was sitting down to write a song.
Samejima That sound is absolutely impossible for AI. I thought it was a very raw, blood-curdling, blood-curdling song.
Deguchi: If I say so, the same goes for the other songs. Among them, the one that left a particularly strong impression on me in the 2023 theater production was "Globe" from "How Do You Live?
Blue Giant" music in general
Samejima: "Beautiful Fin", the theme song of "Detective Conan: Submarine of Black Iron" was beautiful, and I also really liked "uni-verse" from "Gridman Universe", and "THE FIRST SLAM DUNK", a movie that started at the end of last year and took too long to run until this year. I also liked "Dai Zero Kankan" from "The First Slam Dunk," but if I had to choose one, it would be "BLUE GIANT! This was not the theme song, but I felt that the song in general that was performed in the film was very physical. The performance scenes are depicted using motion capture, but the composition, or rather the picture, is a bit distorted or unorganized. But even that was vivid and I liked the lack of order, as if it was not made in a crude way, but was done with the intention of making it this way.
I also saw an interview with the creator. "BLUE GIANT" was originally a comic book, and I am sure the reader hears the best performance in his/her head. When the film is made into a video, the creator has to fight against that. First of all, we have to create a performance scene that will please the reader or audience, and at the same time, we have to create a performance scene that will please the jazz experts as well. He was aiming for a level of perfection that would satisfy both professionals and amateurs, so in that sense he was fighting.
In the world of comedy, when "Akusei Shimobori" won the M-1 championship, their material was a very pop manzai. At that time, Shiraku Tachikawa said, "You guys will be very popular with the public, so from now on, you have to fight against the "noisemakers. By "loud people," he meant "professionals," and he meant that we would have to fight against their point of view. But since Myojo Shimotsuki is currently fighting and winning, I think it is good to have an entertainer who can satisfy both professionals and amateurs. In that sense, "BLUE GIANT" has a "Akiyoshi Shimobori" feel to it (laughs).
It was a good music anime that made me feel the frustration as well as the animation. The scene where the character who was originally a good performer realizes that "I'm just good" was also very vivid. When you are a professional musician, there are times when you wonder, "Is it better to be bad at it? Deguchi: That's the part where you can't praise or appreciate.
Deguchi: That's how you feel when you are not praised or appreciated. But that may be a way of looking at things that can be applied to many things.
Samejima It's a painful scene, and I can understand. I would like to see this movie again and again. I would like to thank the production for making so many wonderful and powerful images, and I would like to thank everyone involved in the production. ...I wonder what side of the fence I'm on (laughs).
In 2024, I expect ani-song singers to strike back!
Deguchi: It's a bit of a letdown, but we are finally at the climax of this dialogue. I would like to sum up the year 2023, and what I think will happen in 2024, but I think the main themes we have talked about are "humanness" and "rawness.
Samejima I think that the "sense of zero" of 10FEET, the calls for "Gridman Universe" and "[guess my child]", and the sense of unity in "Song of the Dead" are all increasing the desire to "feel with our bodies" and "be as one". With the Corona Disaster, I felt that people were enjoying themselves mainly through the distribution, but now I feel that people are saying, "Let's become one because we can become one.
Deguchi: This is not a prediction for the year 2024, but what I personally think would be interesting if this happens is that many things will become experience-based. On the other hand, one of the songs that symbolizes the year 2023 is "Idol," and it has received a staggering 400 million streaming views, but I wonder if it is being paid for. Perhaps they are just being listened to. We need to consider the actual number of people who have bought and paid for the music. I think we need to separate the two a bit more! I'm going to do a one-man live show, please come! But when you open the door, there may be only 20 people, which is a very extreme example.
Samejima Yes, there are! That's my partner! (laughs) I have 100,000 followers on Tiktok, but I have no fans! BANBANBAN doesn't have any fans either!
Deguchi: I do have fans (laughs). You have parents and family, don't you?
Samejima Well, I don't know how effective these "influencers" are (laughs).
Deguchi: I would like to see something that allows people to step out of the world in their rooms or on their smartphones and enjoy things that can only be experienced at events or festival venues in a more casual way. I think the creators need to think a little more about what they can do to lead users there. I think a hint of this can be found in the increasing number of movie revival screenings, and I think the fact that people are now choosing to see movies in theaters instead of streaming them is a sign that the world is becoming more experience-oriented. It is difficult to afford to spend money on entertainment these days, but I think this will be the theme for 2024 and beyond.
Samejima: I have high expectations for ani-song singers to strike back. I think it is the anisong singers who have brought anisong to this point. Last year, I was surprised to hear that Asaka did not have a single tie-up song in 2023. It was surprising. Last year, she didn't perform at Anisama, but on the first day of Anisama, she held a one-man live concert at a live house in Saitama Prefecture during the daytime and told the audience to come to Anisama after my concert. When the cancellation of the Aichi Anison Festival was announced a week before the event, Asaka, who was scheduled to perform at the festival, said, "I might hold a live concert somewhere in Aichi Prefecture as an emergency! I'm looking for a venue right now, if I can find one...I really want to make Aichi Prefecture exciting with ani-song. I think there are people who were planning to travel to Aichi this time. I want them to go home with happy memories of Aichi! I hope this thought reaches a lot of people."
I have a sudden opening on the 9th (Mon. - holiday).
- ✿ Asaka ✿ (@AsakaOfficial) October 4, 2023
I might hold a live concert somewhere in Aichi prefecture urgently!
I'm looking for a venue now, so if I can find one...
I really want to make Aichi Prefecture exciting with ani-song.
I think there are people who were planning to travel to Aichi this time.
I want them to go home with happy memories of Aichi!
I hope this thought will reach many people.
and posted on X. She immediately found a venue and sold out the tickets immediately.
She also likes horse racing, and she's been to a lot of horse racing events and shows, but she's also an ani-song singer. She was very aggressive in showing me that it is possible to be an anime song singer without a tie-up, and I thought we should do the same. He is not at all despondent. I could see her determination to continue to sing ani-song songs in any place, regardless of whether there is a tie-up or not, because I have been singing ani-song songs for a long time. I don't know if the anime song singer industry is centered around Ms. Asaka, but I have high expectations for pure anime song singers like her. I think there are other singers such as Oishi Masayoshi and Suzuki Konomi, but it would be nice if we could fight, or rather coexist and prosper with those who come from J-POP, such as YOASOBI.
Deguchi: It would be a friendly competition.
Samejima I hope you will do your best, and I would like to play along (as a DJ). I would like to support the activities of ani-song singers, even if it is only in a small way. ......Who am I (laughs)?
Deguchi I am listening to this with emotion, but I wonder what position you are in (laughs). (laughs) But I really think so. The fact that it has spread so far and become a main part of the culture. We need to keep increasing the number of people who aspire to be ani-song singers in the next generation.
Samejima That's right. That's why I think it's great that you are open about the fact that you drive a Porsche.
Deguchi I hope that you will be active in communicating how to admire and convey the appeal of Porsche in a way that is only possible in this day and age!
