Mr. Hobby Marker" review, a new water-based marker for plastic models! Easy metallic and weathering painting! The Tool Way! No.25]

Hello, this is Kariyasu! This time, I would like to introduce to you "Mr. Hobby Marker", which is now on sale from GSI Creos!

Mr. Hobby Marker" is a new line of water-based markers for plastic modeling, the first of which includes five metallic colors (gold, silver, copper, gunmetalic, and burnt iron) and a blurring pen for a total of six types!

The official price for each color is a reasonable 330 yen (including tax), and a "Metallic Set" containing all six types (1,980 yen including tax) is also available now.

Ideal for first-time metallic painting!

This marker is water-based, so you don't have to worry about the smell first, and it is easy to handle. Furthermore, the twin type pen nibs, "fine" and "brush," allow for a wide variety of painting techniques if used properly!

Pen nib (fine). The hard nib can be used to paint small parts, and can also be used to recreate a peeling paint job by poking it with the tip.

Pen nib (brush). The slightly soft tip makes painting and smudging possible, just like painting with a brush using a bottle of water-based paint.

Note that this marker cannot be attached to the "Gundam Marker Airbrush System" because its thickness and design are different from those of the Gundam Marker. Be careful not to accidentally buy it for painting the whole body!

I used it right away!

I used a white plastic spoon sold at a 100-yen store to test paint. First, check the comfort of the brush!

Scribbled on the right half with the gold nib (fine) and on the left half with the nib (brush). Both nibs were smooth and easy to draw with, and the paint color was good!

Now use the blurring pen. The blurring pen dissolves the paint little by little, making it easy to make small corrections!

The nib of the blur pen gets a little dirty, so after each use, press the nib against a tissue or Kimwipe to clean it up.

Check out the brilliance of each color!

Next, we conducted a comparison experiment between base and overcoating with gold to see what should be done to get a beautiful coloring with a wide range of paint.

Kreos' water-based black surfacer (black surf) often appears in this series. Since it is water-based, there is no smell, and the strength of the paint film is as good as that of lacquer-based surfacers! It is also available in a bottle, so use it according to your application!

I masked off the plastic spoon and sprayed black surfacing only on the lower half. Black primer is often used to improve the coloring of metallic colors.

After confirming that it has dried, I used the nibs (brushes) of each color to smear the entire surface. Incidentally, in order to check the difference in coloration, the left half was painted only once, while the right half was painted a total of three times while allowing it to dry lightly. The experiment is now complete!

Bottom left (black undercoat + one coat) ...... is no good because the undercoat shows through.

Upper left (no undercoat + one coat)......The coloring is not bad, but unevenness in application is noticeable.

Lower right (black undercoat + 3 coats)......The undercoat shows through a little, and the color is a weighty gold.

Upper right (no undercoat + 3 coats)......Natural and beautiful gold color.

This is the result. I think the color comes out more beautifully if you apply several coats instead of just one.

Then, I tried painting colors other than gold in the same way, and let's see the results!

Silver is perfect for reproducing aluminum material. Compared to the upper right, the lower right has a slightly transparent base, giving it a heavy metal look.

Copper is useful for painting copper wires and mechanical internal parts. There doesn't seem to be much difference between the upper right and lower right.

Gun metallic, which can express a calm steel-like appearance. Like copper, there seems to be little difference between the upper right and lower right.

Baked iron color is used for painting mufflers and vernier parts. Again, there seems to be little difference between the upper right and lower right.

By the way, to check the strength of the paint film, I scratched the surface with a claw. ......

The paint came off immediately on the upper half without substrate, but on the lower half with substrate, the surface became a little thinner, but the paint did not come off!

Conclusion

When painting a large area, it is better to apply several coats to get an even and beautiful coloring.

Gold and silver are more vivid when the base is white, and a little more massive when the base is black. Other colors do not differ that much.

The use of a buffing compound for the base coat makes the paint film stronger. It is safe even if the painted surface is lightly bumped after painting.

The above is a summary of the results. In summary

It is best to apply several coats of paint after spraying the base coat with a sanding compound. Use gold or silver for the color of the buff, and black for a more dignified look. Otherwise, white or gray will do!"

This would be the case. Of course, there will be subtle differences depending on the painting method and the number of coats, so this is just for reference!

Actual painting!

Finally, let's take a look at an example of painting using actual plastic models.

This is a heat rod of HG Guf. As it looks plastic as it is, let's paint it silver.

No primer is used, and a pen nib (brush) is used to apply the paint. Since we are not going to paint a large area, don't worry about unevenness of the paint!

I painted only the tip of the pen, but it looks cool and metallic at once! It is okay to paint the weapon parts of Gundam and mecha kits metallic to the point of overkill. Silver is also a good choice!

And here is a 1/72 scale Sherman tank. It has already been painted and weathered, but I felt it lacked a metallic look, so I repainted it!

I used a gun metallic pen nib (fine) to add accents to the steel parts of the caterpillar. This is a simple job, but it is very important!

Completed! I was able to successfully create the different textures of the rubber, dirt, and metal parts! It is convenient to use a single marker to add accents with ease when it is troublesome to go to the trouble of painting with a brush!
