The series has become a topic of conversation because of its detailed, sometimes boldly expressed artwork and the use of a combination of CG and Japanese paper textures to create innovative images that have never been seen before. At the time of its broadcast, the series attracted many fans by spinning an adventure tale of a man selling medicine who confronts a monstrous monster.

This summer, "Mononokai" will be reborn as a theater version, "Mononokai Karakasa the Movie," which will be released on July 26 (Fri.) in Japan. Set in the inner chambers of a ladies' chambers, a medicine seller confronts a mononoke born from the passions of the ladies' maids and carves out a new legend.

As long as there is a human world, there will be monsters. Since ancient times, when an ayakashi (a kind of monster) attaches itself to a person's passions or grudges, it becomes a mononokai and brings misfortune to the people. The only sword in the world that can slay these monsters is the demon-slaying sword. There is a medicine man who travels around the world using it to slay monsters. The medicine man continues his journey while saving people's hearts.

Ooku is a special place where beautiful and talented women are gathered from all over the country to produce the heir to the "Prince of Heaven" who rules the world, and is also an important bureaucracy. Asa and Kame, two new housemaids, step into this unusual space, a "society" with its own set of rules.
Asa is a brilliant and talented woman seeking career advancement, while Kame is a woman seeking a place in the Ooku, a place she has always longed to be. From day one, these two opposites are forced to participate in a "ritual" to become a part of the group, in which they are required to offer "something precious" to the "Omizu-sama," the deity worshipped in the inner palace.
