TV anime "Ao no Hako" Anime Expo 2024 report

One of the largest anime events in North America, "Anime Expo 2024" was held in Los Angeles, U.S., and a panel event for the TV anime "Ao no Hako" was held on Saturday, July 6. The main cast members of the work, Shoya Chiba (playing Daiki Inomata), Akari Kito (playing Hina Chono), and Shu Murakoshi (editor in charge of "Weekly Shonen Jump") appeared on stage and introduced the work's charms in full while receiving enthusiastic cheers from the fans.

The panel began with an introductory talk about the work. After introducing the story, the cast members themselves explained the characters they play. Mr. Chiba commented on the appeal of Daiki, the character he plays, saying, "Daiki is a straightforward high schooler who works hard at badminton. The story begins when he falls in love with Chinatsu, a senior student, because he admires her dedication.
From my point of view, the story depicts in great detail the kind of worries that Japanese boys have and the thrill they feel toward women, so I play the role while sympathizing with the characters." Kito introduced Hina's charms. Ms. Kito commented on the appeal of Hina: "Hina is a very cheerful and energetic girl, and she and Daiki have always been good friends. She is a hardworking girl who does rhythmic gymnastics and always achieves good results in it. She is a hardworking girl who has always done well in rhythmic gymnastics," he commented. Rena Ueda, who plays Chinatsu and was unable to attend the event, delivered a special message and introduced the other heroine, Chinatsu Kano. Chiba commented on the appeal of Chinatsu, "Chinatsu is the heroine of this work, and she is known by many people for her beautiful appearance and good personality, but from Taiki's point of view, she is attractive because she is a gumshoe who seriously challenges the inter-high school competition and is seriously frustrated when she fails. I thought Ueda-san played Chinatsu in a really charming way." Ms. Kito said, "I have the impression that Chinatsu is a girl who doesn't know what she is thinking, but it is because she doesn't know that I am attracted to her, or perhaps I am interested in her, and I think that is her charm. I thought that was the charm of the character.

Mr. Murakoshi, the editor in charge of the original manga, took the stage at this point. To further explore the appeal of the work, the talk was conducted in a question-and-answer format.
Ao no Hako" depicts both aspects of life-size high school students devoting themselves to sports and a love story.
Mr. Murakoshi said, "It was decided from the beginning to draw a romance manga set in a school. This is a backstory, but at first the heroine was in the photography club. I wanted to depict a relationship where the heroine supports the hero and the hero supports the hero, rather than one where the hero unilaterally supports the hero, and I wanted to depict a relationship where people who work hard for each other can respect each other. We decided to draw characters who are all working hard at something. In Japanese high schools, people from different sports often practice in the same space, so I thought it would be a good idea to set the story there. That's why we decided to do it. I decided to use it as a stage. When we asked Mr. Murakoshi about the motifs of the three sports that the characters play in the film, badminton, basketball, and rhythmic gymnastics, he replied, "Mr. Miura actually played badminton when he was a student. First of all, that is a big part of it. Daiki was a member of the volleyball club in the reading of the manga before it was serialized, but since Daiki is a character who often confronts his emotions and fights with himself, we decided on the badminton club because we thought that an individual sport would be more suitable for him.
The reason why Chinatsu belonged to the basketball club was because I was talking with the teacher about how cute the girls' basketball club is among Japanese junior high and high school students. I don't know what the image would be in the U.S., but in Japan, girls who play basketball are dashing and cool, so I decided to go with that.
Hina, like Daiki, has an image of an individual athlete, so we decided on the "individual athlete" part. And I chose rhythmic gymnastics because it was close to my image of the sport that the heroine plays. She told an episode of her life.

The audience was excited by the episode that raised expectations for the future development. The second teaser visual, which will be unveiled for the first time at Anime Expo 2024, was also unveiled. The audience cheered loudly when the refreshing illustration of Daiki, Chinatsu, and Hina, which depicts the summer season, was unveiled!
A special video made especially for Anime Expo was also shown, and it was the most exciting event of the day.

The event, which was a great success, closed with a message of thanks from the guests.

Chiba: "I am very happy to have met so many people, and I am glad that the wonderfulness of "Ao no Hako" has been conveyed beyond the borders of Japan. Ao no Hako" also places great importance on silent scenes, and each line is carefully drawn. We put our heart and soul into each scene while dubbing. I think it is the strongest work that has both the passion and delicacy of a shonen manga, so if so many people know about it before the anime airs, I think it will be an explosive hit once it starts, so please support us!

Mr. Kito: "When I said that this stage would soon be over, everyone said, 'Ehh~! I was surprised to hear that it was happening in the U.S. as well (laughs)! I was so surprised (laughs). I was so happy to know that Japanese animation is loved so much even in such a far away place! I am sure that everyone will be able to see "Ao no Hako" when the anime airs in the near future, and I am sure that it will be a truly wonderful anime, so I hope that you will watch it a lot and recommend it to your friends. I will definitely come back to the U.S. again, so when I do, please come again everyone!"

Ms. Murakoshi: "Actually, just before this panel started, I received a message from Dr. Miura to everyone, so I will read it.
It is 3:00 am here. I'm glad that everyone in such a faraway place with such a time difference loves "Ao no Hako". Let's enjoy the anime together!
