Akiba Research Institute Anime Movie Awards 2018" is a competition to decide the best animated film among all the animated films screened in theaters in 2018. Of the 63 works selected by Akiba Research Institute's editorial department based on their own prejudice, "Detective Conan: Zero no Shikkounin" took the top spot. In this 22nd entry in the series, Toru Amuro, a member of the Public Security Police, stands in the way of Conan's pursuit of the truth in order to save Kogoro Mouri, who has been arrested as a suspect in a bombing case.
This time, the number of votes for the "Conan: The Last Airbender" increased rapidly to 12,770, probably due in part to the appeal of Toru Furuya, who plays the role of Toru Amuro. Even with such a call to action, however, the series has been the highest-grossing series for six consecutive years and took the second place in the box office ranking of Japanese films released in 2018 with 9.18 billion yen, making it the top-grossing anime film of 2018. This ranking is also a nod to the results of the film.
Next in second place was "Natsume's Book of Friends the Movie: Utsusemi ni Tsunagari," the first feature-length film in the anime series based on the popular comics by Yuki Midorikawa. Takahiro Omori, who directed the first four TV series (and was the general director for the fifth and sixth seasons), was the general director of the film, which featured original episodes supervised by the original author. In this special movie frame, the story is told in the same heartwarming way as the TV version, without any exaggerated storyline or direction, and is depicted in a more deliberate and detailed manner. The film version must have soothed fans with its calm atmosphere and cute Nyanko-sensei, as is typical of the Natsume's Book of Friends. Although it is a late-night TV animation, it is a popular work that has continued for six seasons.
Macross Delta the Movie: Gekijo no Valkyrie (Macross Delta the Movie: Gekijo no Valkyrie)" came in third. As with the previous Macross series, this work is a new interpretation of the TV anime "Macross Delta," with new songs by Valkyrie, battle scenes, live scenes, etc. New cuts were added to the movie version about a year after the TV anime ended. The long-awaited movie version of "Hibikake!
In fourth place was the spin-off of "Hibike! Euphonium" spin-off "Liz and the Blue Bird. Directed by Naoko Yamada of Kyoto Animation, "Liz and the Blue Bird" depicts the coming-of-age story of two female students who are about to graduate from high school. The film's sometimes bold, sometimes precise depiction of the wavering emotions of two contrasting best friends, a shy girl and a naïve girl, attracted a large audience with its delicate depiction of the two.
Popular works such as "Shigeki no Kyojin," "Bokuno no Hero Academia," "Bungo Stray Dogs," "Dragon Ball Super," and "Sequel to the Last Tale" were ranked in fifth through tenth place. Among them, we would like to highlight the 10th-ranked "Sayonara no Mornin' ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou (Let's Put the Promised Flowers on the Morning of Goodbye).
This is the directorial debut of Mari Okada, a scriptwriter who has written scenarios for popular anime and live-action films, and it drew a great deal of attention from anime fans. Set in a fantasy world, the work skillfully depicts various forms of love, such as "lovers," "family," and "friends," with intense and sometimes heart-wrenchingly sad feelings of inadequacy, and it became a topic of conversation.
