The 16th Wind Tengu Ryumain Kanto Region Ota City, Gunma Prefecture

The words "Kakaratengu and Kakarakaze" have been handed down from generation to generation in Gunma Prefecture. This is an old saying in Gunma Prefecture.

The local people call the dry, cold, strong winds that blow in from the north in the winter "Akagi oroshi" or "Kamishu kuukaze. The "Kaze-Tengu Ryumain" introduced here is a local hero who controls the wind that protects Ota City in Gunma Prefecture.

First, let us introduce Ota City, Gunma Prefecture.

Ota City in Gunma Prefecture is located in the lower south of the prefecture, adjacent to Saitama and Tochigi prefectures.

The population is 221,437 (estimated population, June 1, 2019). The city trees are pine (symbol tree), magnolia, maple, and ginkgo, and the city flowers are kiku, salvia, azalea, and shunran. The mascot character is "Ohtan.

The area is bordered by two rivers, the Tone River to the south and the Watarase River to the northeast, and there are two mountains in the city, Kanayama (金山) and Hachiojiyama (八王子山).

The area is characterized by torrential rain and roaring thunder in summer, and by strong winds known as "kukafu" in winter, resulting in rough weather conditions.

This area produced Nitta Yoshisada, a military commander who was active from the Kamakura period to the Nanbokucho period. After leading his army directly into Kamakura to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate, Emperor Godaigo established the Kemmu government (in which the emperor himself administered government). Yoshisada fought against the Ashikaga clan, which rebelled against the Emperor's government, and fought hard as a general of the Emperor's army.

During the Edo period (1603-1867), the town prospered as a post town on the Nikko Kaido highway, Ota-juku, and as the gateway to Daikoin Temple. Daikoin is a temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, and was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu after inviting Donryu Shonin to worship his ancestor Nitta Yoshishige. Nitta Yoshishige was the founder of the Nitta family, and Yoshisada is the ninth head of the family. He was a high priest of the Jodo sect who was active during the Warring States period. He took in many children who had been reduced to poverty as his disciples and devoted himself to helping and educating them.

Today, the town is known as the corporate castle town of Subaru, and has the third largest population in the prefecture, making it the most populous industrial city in northern Kanto.

Specialty products include yams (yam and yam yam) and small watermelons. These crops, which are said to have been cultivated since the Meiji period (1868-1912), are the result of the fertile soil nurtured by the repeated flooding of the Tone River.

The small watermelon is a relatively new specialty, having been cultivated since the 1960s. These watermelons are easy to eat, just the right size for two adults, and are popular for their sweet taste.

The specialty is Jyoshu Ota yakisoba. Various yakisoba restaurants line the streets of Ota City. When many migrant workers gathered in Ota City, an industrial city, during the high economic growth period, yakisoba, which does not have any soup, became rooted in this town as a fast food that many workers enjoyed because they did not have to worry about the noodles stretching.

Fu Tengu Rümain Begins

Here is the story of "Rümain".

Once upon a time, a great monster went on a rampage in the ancient land of Kaminokuni in the sky.

To exterminate this great monster, the ruler of the Land of the Gods sent Ryutengu, a warrior who wielded the wind, and Tennyo, a celestial maiden who manipulated electric shocks.

As a result, there was a tremendous downpour, gusty winds, and thunderous roars. In the end, the Tennyo struck a thunderbolt with all her might against both the great yokai and the dragon tengu, who were now engaged in a battle. As a result, the daiyokai and the dragon tengu were mortally wounded.

The daiyokai is mortally wounded after falling near Ota City, Gunma Prefecture. And Ryu-tengu, who was following the Great Yokai, also ran out of strength above the vicinity of Ota City and fell into a gold mine in Ota City. He fell into a long sleep.

On the other hand, Tennyo also used up all her strength and fell toward Tochigi Prefecture.

There, she was treated by the maidens of the village, but her strength failed her. In gratitude for the healing, the nymph gave her last strength to the maidens and disappeared. The day she fell was July 7, the day of the Star Festival. From there, the nymph was named Orihime and worshipped as the guardian deity of the village.

After that, maidens who inherited her power became active as degenerates protecting neighboring villages, and the power of the Tennyo was inherited and organized from generation to generation. ......, but this will be a story of another local hero, so let's talk about it another time.

Now, the year is 2008. A great monster is half-awakened from a deep sleep.

In order to heal his wounds, the "snake-eyed one" - a.k.a. "the snake-eyed one" - released from himself attacked the people of Ota City one after another. The snake-eyed creatures, who target large amounts of energy, especially target children, who have strong energy. The dragon tengu also awoke from his long sleep when he sensed the serpent's eye's evil presence. To follow in the footsteps of the great yokai, he took the name of Ryu Mine and began hunting for the eye of the snake.

Before long, the snake-eyed one becomes the talk of the town, and becomes the talk of the town among elementary school students on their way home from cram school or play.

While the fear that they might be attacked by the snake-eyed creature on their way home (......) was a source of anxiety for the children, word spread that if they encountered the snake-eyed creature, they could call for help by heading for the gold mine, and the Wind Tengu Rümain, riding on the whirlwind, would come to their rescue. Rümain became known as a hero who protected the city of Ota.

Long-established hero maker TMC Wild

Next up is the story of "Kazetengu Ryumain" and the birth of its governing body, TMC Wild. Kazetengu Ryumain is operated by TMC Wild, a veteran action troupe among veterans, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. In fact, Kazetengu Ryumain is the sixth hero created by TMC Wild.

The core members of TMC Wild, who originally did TV hero action shows and later became the core of TMC Wild, hit a wall as they continued to put on shows.

TV hero shows are supposed to be attractions that allow people to experience "the world of that hero. However, they realized that the high price of admission and the lack of interest among parents raised the bar for those who wanted to see the shows, and only a limited number of children were able to enjoy them.

As a result, they came up with the idea that heroes should be more accessible to children. Therefore, they started to create an original hero to bring the hero show to the many children who wanted to see the show.

Gradually, the framework of TMC Wild was developed by adding people with special skills, such as an acquaintance who could sculpt, and a friend who could sew costumes.

The local organizers of "Gunma Kodomo no Kuni" in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, who were in favor of this project, gave us permission to use their outdoor stage, and we held our first local hero (*1) show. At last, TMC Wild was launched.

Since then, TMC Wild has expanded its activities beyond Kodomo no Kuni, limiting its shows to areas within the prefecture.

As a result, TMC Wild has grown into a major action troupe with as many as five series of local heroes.

1 Local heroes

1 Local heroes are original heroes who limit their activities to a specific region.

One day in 2008, the leader of the troupe saw a TV program featuring "local heroes (*2). In that program, a local hero who does clean-up activities in the city was introduced. Shocked and inspired by this new genre of "local heroes" who not only perform show-based hero activities but also volunteer their services, they immediately decided to enter the "local hero" world.

2 Local Hero

Heroes who are rooted in the local community and mainly active in their home town, but without limiting the specific scope of their activities, and who incorporate local specialty, local specialties, history, legends, etc. into their costume symbols and designs.

TV heroes aired at the time included "Masked Rider Kiva," "Flaming God Sentai Go-onger," "Ultraman Mobius," and "Tomica Hero Rescue Force. It was a time when a variety of heroes were in the crowd, and the TV tokusatsu world was in a state of hot excitement. At the same time, the Tohoku area was the most active in the local hero area and was covered by many media, and local heroes were being born in major cities. In the midst of all this, Gunma Prefecture decided to create a new local hero, and was inspired by the legend of "Akagisan Suginobo," the great tengu of Mount Akagi, and "Kaze Tengu Ryu Mine" was born as a warrior who controls the wind from Gunma's famous "kukafu" (wind in the sky). It continues to this day.

Today, Ryumain is one of the most well-known and experienced heroes in Japan, and with TMC Wild's activities centered on local heroes, Ryumain continues to be active as a long-loved local hero, traveling around Japan today.
