National Prefectural eSports Championship 2019 IBARAKI, Puyopuyo eSports division, results announced!

The National Prefectural eSports Championship 2019 IBARAKI was held on October 5 and 6, 2019, at the Tsukuba International Congress Center in Ibaraki Prefecture. The main competition was held in the "Puyopuyo eSports" section, one of the events of the tournament.

The first title in the "Puyo Puyo" series appeared in 1991. The series has become synonymous with the action puzzle game genre thanks to its clear-cut game system, in which players connect multiple "Puyos" of the same color to make them disappear, as well as the competitive element, which was a first for an action puzzle game at the time, and which has gained popularity. PuyoPuyo eSports" is the latest title in the "PuyoPuyo" series, and it incorporates the eSports elements of the title to further enhance the competitive nature of the game.

The final competition was divided into a "general division" and an "elementary school student division. Forty-eight players, including the 47 winners of the nationwide qualifying tournaments and a special quota for the host prefecture of Ibaraki, competed in the "general division," while eight players representing eight blocks across the country participated in the "elementary school division. Each division had a preliminary league and a final tournament, and those who made it through the preliminary rounds competed in the final tournament. The winners of the "General Division" were the best in Japan.

The winner of the "General Division" was Mackie, a high school student and professional player. After winning all of his matches in the preliminary league and advancing to the final tournament, he won the semifinal match against Saitama's live player in two consecutive sets. In the final match, he battled Piponia, representing Kanagawa, and won in two consecutive sets, as he did in the semifinals. He climbed to the top of the standings at a breakneck pace. After the victory, Mackie commented, "Of course I wanted to win the national championship, but more than that, I wanted to beat Piponia, so I am very happy to have won.

On the other hand, the winner of the elementary school division was Koishi♪, a 6th grader representing the Kyushu-Okinawa block. In the final, Koishi♪ and Kappi-kun, a representative of Hokkaido, battled it out, with both players launching "big chains" and engaging in a high-level battle that saw both players not backing down. Koishi♪ said, "I was not confident in the beginning, so I think I was able to win because I was able to gain a little confidence. I want to tell people all over the country how happy I am to have won.

The qualifying rounds and the final tournament can be viewed in the archived videos now being distributed, so be sure to check them out.
