We'll keep pushing forward with the momentum from the third season!" Daiki Yamashita x "The character to watch out for is 'Overhaul! Kenjiro Tsuda. Interview before the start of the fourth season of the fall anime "My Hero Academia!

The fourth season of the TV anime "My Hero Academia" will begin airing on October 12, 2019. The fourth season will start with the "Hero Intern Arc". The main character, Izuhisa, will face new "threats" and a new "mission" as a hero as he takes on the challenge of interning under a professional hero.

Akiba Research Institute asked Daiki Yamashita, who plays the main character, Deku Midoriya, and Kenjiro Tsuda, who played the role of Overhaul in the third and final episode, "Invincible," about the fourth season.

More than just a "royal hero story

──About a year after thethirdseason thatended inSeptember2018, the long-awaitedfourthseason of theTVanimeis about to begin. First of all,how did you feel when you heard that the fourth season has been decided?

Yamashita: Of course I was happy, but I knew they would do it, so it was more of a "Okay, let's keep going with it! I was more like, "Okay, I'm going to keep going with the motivation of the third season! Because, after seeing the way the show ended, I knew there would definitely be a fourth season.

───Tsuda-san, youappeared in the last part of thethirdseason, butnow that you are fully participating in thefourthseason, could you tell us about your impressions of this work and its appeal?

Tsuda: Having made a memorable appearance at the end of the third season, I am happy to be joining the fourth season. My Hero Academia" is a hero story, an adventure action drama with a hero with the vigor of a royal hero, but I think it has a very brushed-up, wonderful feel to it. I think it is a cool work that combines the heroes that America has nurtured with the heroes that our predecessors in Japan have nurtured in shounen magazines, and perhaps especially so in the fourth season, it has been brushed up to include a complex human character.

Mr. Daiki Yamashita

─ The "Overhaul" played by Mr. Tsuda is a very popular character in the original work, andat the end of thethirdseason, fans thought, "There he is! Did you feel the reaction of the fans?

Tsuda: There was a lot of excitement. I felt a lot of excitement. I am very grateful for that. I felt a certain pressure to play a character that is so popular, like, "You have to do your best. I feel a certain pressure to do my best, but I am very happy to be able to appear as an enemy (villain) in a popular work that has continued for three seasons, and I am having a lot of fun while recording.

─ Did you feel the buzz of "Obaho" as well?

Yamashita: There are many cast members who have read the original work and love it. Especially among the members of 1A, we sometimes discuss about the work, and there was a lot of talk on the set about "who will play the overhaul". When the cast for the overhaul was announced, there were shouts of "Tsuda-san or ...... is strong! (laughs). All of us in the cast are also fans of the work, so we knew that Overhaul was going to appear, and we knew what kind of character he would be, so when it came to the anime adaptation, we wanted to see how he would move, how he would activate his "personality," and in what way he would stir things up, I think Overhaul is a core character in the fourth season, and listening to what Tsuda-san has to say in interviews, I feel that I am looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.

─ Did you have any instructions or advice for "Overhaul," such a promising character, at the recording studio?

Tsuda: During the recording of the first voice, I tried to make the character heavier and more crazy, but the sound director, Mr. Mima, told me to make the character a little more flat. I created a character that was crazy, but brought out the more intellectual side of the character.

───How was it for you, Yamashita-san, playing the role of Deku?

Yamashita: He is elusive. I don't know what he is thinking, and that scares me. What in the world is coming out of him? I felt a sense of dread. At first, Deku doesn't really have a conversation with me. They meet by chance, but the overhaul is definitely a performance, and you can't tell anything from that scene alone. He doesn't show his true feelings at all, which is scary, and I think the only impression Deku gives is "I don't know what's going on, but he's a scary guy. But anyway, when I see Eri's expression and the way she is trembling, I feel that she is doing something unusual. But I can't see the dark side of his true feelings, and he is a very difficult character, or rather, a character that is really too complicated to understand. His intellectuality seems to be plain, but there is something wrong with him, something strange that is brewing.

─ Did you feel that the work has changed since the appearance of "Overhaul," the character from the road?

Yamashita: I think the story has become a bit more difficult because he is the head of a designated villain organization. The social positions of heroes and villains have been described more and more, and the story has become more complex and detailed than before. Overhaul is a completely bad guy, but he has ambitions and a core, and I think he is determined to achieve them. That's why there is a heavier side to the story, so I think it will be a different kind of story for adults. Overhaul is an enemy (villain) who is in a position to be depicted in a serious manner, with people dying around him, so I thought he was an oblique character that has not appeared in the past. Shigaraki is also a character I don't understand, and Stain, an enemy (villain) I fought in the second season, was a character that was popular in the media because he said "I want to do this and I want to do that," but I thought he was a character who was working in the dark behind the scenes. I think he is a character with a lot of thought put into how he is presented, and I think there are a lot of things you don't understand until you see the end of the film.

A time of many troubles, and that is why he grew up.

─ ─I think Deku has gone through a lot in thethreeseasons of theTVseries, but what is your impression of him now?

Yamashita: I think he is a character that really changes each time. He had been running straight towards the existence of All Might, but in the fourth season, there was an episode where his mind became more shaky than usual. Deku is always a character who recovers quickly, but this time he is in a fog for quite a long time. I think he is going through a troubled period that will probably be one of the major events for him.

─ Is this different from the previous series?

Yamashita: I think that the weight of his troubles has increased compared to the past series, whether they need to be resolved properly or whether he has to come to terms with them. It is a time of growth, or a time when I have to think for myself. He always had someone next to him to lend a helping hand, but now he has more matters to solve on his own, and I think this is a difficult time for him.

─ From your point of view, how do you feel about the atmosphere at the postrecording studio, or theatmosphere of1-A?

Tsuda: Basically, the work proceeds in a relaxed and soft atmosphere, but there is a sense of tension, and everyone is geared toward the creation of the work. There is a strong and clear atmosphere of each individual trying to fulfill his or her role, which is very comfortable for the actors.

─ ─ Do you feel the enthusiasm of the work site?

Tsuda: Yes, I can sense it. Of course, we have to put together the play logically, but we also have to put together the play emotionally and with heart, which is also fun.

─ ─What is it like to join a work that has been in production forthreeseasons?

Tsuda: Of course there is a sense of being a new character, but I think that sense of being a new character is also a part of the character of the enemy (villain), Overhaul.

──Do you have a certain mindset when playing a villain?

Tsuda: I love playing villains because it gives me a lot of freedom and is a lot of fun. I can do all kinds of things that I can't do as a character on the righteous side (laughs). (Laughs.) On the hero side, there are restrictions on what you are not allowed to do in a play, but with villains, the restrictions are sometimes looser, so I really enjoy the wide range of freedom that comes with playing an enemy (villain) or a villain.

Kenjiro Tsuda

The character to watch out for is "Jizaki"?

───Can you tell us about the character you are interested in for thefourthseason?

Tsuda: There is a character named Chisaki, and he is a great character. Chisaki is Overhaul's real name.

Yamashita (laughs).

What kind of character is he?

Tsuda Well, his voice is really good.

Yamashita You are yourself (laughs).

Tsuda I was just kidding (laughs). Other than that, well, I think the Night Eye (CV: Shinichiro Miki) team is interesting. I feel that people who would not normally be together are now together. If you gather characters with similar "personalities" and mentalities, there will be a bias, so by gathering different types and working toward the same goal, I think the balance will be better. I also learn a lot about life, including the conflicts faced by the Niteye team, so I enjoy watching the recording even when I am not in the scene. I think that the story is made more dynamic by the fact that semi-professionals, or rather students, have been brought into a group of professionals.

─ What did you learn from watching the NIGHTEYE TEAM, or were you inspired by them?

Tsuda: I feel that it is a story of a boy who is going out into society. The intern system is the very essence of society, and even if you enter a company or organization and try to follow a child's theory, it will not work in an adult society. Even so, I think it is a challenge in real life to live without compromising our purity. Sometimes we have to become adults, but if we become adults completely, there is no point in doing "expression. Since we still have our youthfulness, we are living in such a limbo, so it is interesting that we are not strangers to the world. In the beginning of the scene where Deku and Overhaul meet for the first time, they lie to each other, have a fake conversation, and don't speak their true feelings. I was impressed by the fact that if he had stepped forward, the whole scene would have ended, so I worked very carefully on the acting. In the battle between adults and children, Deku tasted defeat once. He is completely defeated by the adults, but he has to start all over again. The fact that there is a loser's battle is one of the good things about society. That's what makes it so realistic.

───What about you, Mr. Yamashita?

Yamashita I think Osamu Osamu is not bad, but the pest mask is a bit of a problem (laughs).

Tsuda I'm just kidding (laughs).

Yamashita The night eye team is also good. In the fourth season of the Hero Internship, everyone is working for the sake of Neciri-chan. It is a story of heroes who rescue her. It's a story about a girl named Neciri-chan who needs to be saved regardless of her abilities, and they work hard to do so. There are a lot of complicated details in the story, but I think it is actually a simple story. I think that Nekiri-chan is a very important character for Deku, and I am sure that she is a key person in the modern society as well. I think that Neciri-chan is a very important character, and I am sure that she would be an important key person in today's society.

Tsuda: I think there must be a girl like Nekiri-chan somewhere.

Yamashita I think that "someone who is seeking salvation somewhere" is the existence of Nekiri-chan in this work. I think she is a very important character in this internship. Although she is a presence in this work, I believe that she exists in the real world as well.

─ ─ Especially in the fourthseason, the subtleties of the heart seem to be difficult to understand.

Yamashita: Onsite, we start by talking about why we are here, even if it is just a word or two. The work is made after searching for the reason why they were chosen to be here and why they are here because they are in the right place at the right time. I feel that the story is becoming more and more robust each time. Also, the sense of camaraderie between Milio and Deku has been created, and it's fun to play the role, and for me, it's very exciting.

───Did your encounter with Milio change anything?

Yamashita: Originally, Milio's "personality" was said to be difficult to use, and he was not a very good person, but he worked hard to the point of death and grew up to become one of the "Big 3. I think Deku has a strong admiration for him because he is the person who made it to the top of Yuuei through his great efforts, but I feel that his feelings toward Milio change every time we record the 4th season as we work together.

───Themovie version was released during the broadcast of thethirdseason, but were there any changes or discoveries after the movie version?

Yamashita: It is an original story that was not depicted in the original work, but the author, Kohei Horikoshi, supervised the story, and the timeline of the original work clearly states that the events took place before the forest camp (depicted in the third season), so my feelings about the story changed completely. In the movie version, All Might and I fought together, but that didn't happen until the third season when All Might retired. But in the movie version, we were able to fight together as enemies (villains), and I think this is a very big event for Deku. I think it was a very powerful thing for Deku to be able to fight side by side with someone he considers to be "my hero. That's why I think his admiration for All Might as a hero became even stronger, and I think it became even deeper when he learned how amazing he is and how much he holds in his heart. I think that Deku's feelings toward the things that All Might will be involved in in the future will become even stronger, and I think that these feelings will appear throughout the fourth season. There were many parts that became clear to me that without the movie version, he would not have been able to become so strong, and that it was because of that battle that he was able to feel this way.

───Pleasegive us your enthusiasm for thefourth season, which is about to start airing.

Tsuda: As an overhaul, we were able to make an appearance at the end of the third season, as if to say, "Now, we are coming out! And that alone was a luxury, but the first appearance in the fourth season will be very cool, as if to say, "Finally, the enemy (villain) is coming out! I am grateful to have been able to make such a cool appearance in the first episode of the fourth season. I hope you will warmly watch overhaul. I hope you will watch Overhaul warmly. He is an interesting and fascinating character who lives up to everyone's expectations. I am truly honored to be able to participate in "My Hero Academia. I will make every word count, so I would be happy if you could give me your full support.

Yamashita: It's been about a year since the fourth season, and I think that there are people who have been supporting us since the first season, as well as people who are supporting us from here. I think the fourth season is a season that is taking on new challenges, so I hope that people will really enjoy that aspect as well. There are many students from Yuuei High School, but the Hero Intern Arc, which is the first part of the fourth season, is less about academia and more about serious adults on the side of professional heroes, but I hope people will take that part as a new story of "My Hero Academia", I would be happy if you could enjoy that part of the story and broaden the scope of "My Hero Academia" in the future.

The rest is up to the cast and the staff to continue to do their best to make each character a "pulls ultra! I hope you will watch every single episode so that you can keep up with our enthusiasm.

─ ─ Thank you very much. Lastly, could you tell us again about the appeal of this work, which will appeal to young and old alike?

Tsuda: This film is a strong example of the real world, and the main characters still have a strong sense of what it means to be a professional, what work is, and what it means to live, all of which we lose as we get older. I believe that this is what motivates the veterans as well, so it is a work that inspires them to keep working hard, and it is a work that will stick with even working people who have already had a certain amount of time in their careers.

Yamashita: I think everyone yearns to be a hero. This work reminds us of that feeling. Mr. Horikoshi himself loves heroes, and he also has great respect for foreign heroes, and "My Hero Academia" is filled with such things. I think it is also nostalgic for those who used to like such things and those who like them now. I am sure that there are many people who are stressed out in their daily lives and end up drinking too much or eating too much, but when you see the people who are working hard in this film, you may think, "What am I doing now while my children are working hard to achieve their dreams? I think there are many aspects that can be applied to real life. In "My Hero Academia," the professional heroes are really cool and I admire them. I think "My Hero Academia" makes me think that I need to be like them, so adults can watch "My Hero Academia" as adults. I think adults can watch "My Hero Academia" as adults. I think this is a work that makes children who watch it think, "I too must protect these children in this way.
