On Friday, October 25, 2019, the original animation "I Want to Be Popular Only with You" was released in theaters.

Written and composed by "Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai" (We Still Don't Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day) and "My Heart is Screaming". The original character design is by Yamako of HoneyWorks, known for the "Confessions Committee: Love Series" series, and the director is the up-and-coming Shun Hisato, who worked on "GARO" and "Hammerhead" as assistant director. The film is planned and written by Yasushi Akimoto. Let us introduce its charms.

The main character of the story is a clumsy boy.

Through their participation in the "Mote-men Koshien," high school boys who are good-looking but somewhat "disappointing" learn about love, friendship, and ....... The changes in the boys are so delicately portrayed and so endearing that you find yourself rooting for not only the five boys but also for Horiko (=Sakiko Horinomiya, CV: Yui Ishikawa).

The "Motemen Koshien" is a big event in which high school boys from all over Japan compete in groups of five to show how to be popular with the ladies. The prize money for winning is a whopping 10 million yen. He is a popular boy with the girls and has been a butler for the rich young lady Horiko ever since he was a child. There, he chooses as his friends four good-looking but unfortunate high school boys - Tokio Furuta (CV. Souma Saito), Shigekazu Ashida (a.k.a. Asimo; CV. Koki Uchiyama), Kotaro Tojima (CV. Rikiya Tomizono) and Aki Sahashi (CV. Teijo Matsuoka). They are abducted by Shun and brought to the Horinomiya household, where they are informed for the first time that they will be competing in the "Mote-men Koshien.

Tokio is a cool looking guy, but he is not good with girls and has a cold attitude.

Asimo is slim, muscular, and friendly, but his words and actions are too childish.

Kotaro is a little cute looking, but his cuteness makes him hurt girls.

Aki, who is tall and looks like she would be popular with girls, but is not interested in girls or even people themselves.

Asimo, in particular, has a lot of conspicuous behavior, such as "towering over" others and making noise in the classroom with milk coming out of his eyes because of his energy, to the extent that the girls are turned off by his behavior. If anything, even Tokio, who is good friends with Asimo, treats him coldly.

Why were they chosen, of all people, ......?

If the goal is to win the "Motemen Koshien," are you sure these members will be okay? ......

If they were classmates, if they were friends, these awkward and unfortunate boys would be cute. But as a lover?　......That thought makes me worry about their future, but they steadily grow from this point on, so much so that I think such worries were useless. Incidentally, they were chosen because, according to Hayao, they are "the gem in the rough of popular men. With Hayao as the first member, the gemstones are polished.

The three accepted to participate in the competition for a variety of reasons: they want the prize money they split, they think Horiko is cute, and they want to be popular with the ladies. Tokio, who is neither interested in money nor popularity, also decides to participate for one reason. The five of them then set up the "Odawara Jyosei High School Motemen's Club.

Clumsy high school boys learn and grow in love and friendship.

The "Motemen Koshien" is a tournament in which the audience judges the winners using SNS. The six pairs that win the preliminary round of the tournament advance to the main competition, so the "motemen club" began special training, first changing their fashion and hairstyles to enhance their looks. Even Kotaro, with his feminine looks, was praised by Horiko as "cool.

The straight and pure appearance of the four members, who are gradually gaining confidence as they take another step closer to becoming the motemen, is heartwarming. You can't help but want to murmur, "Keep up the good work ......!" is one of the charms of this work.

Tokio is a bookworm, and after deciding to participate in the "Motemen Koshien," he thought to himself, "If only there was a girl somewhere who could read the same book, be exposed to the same phrases, and feel the same way ......" about motemen. In his case, when he is told that the scam e-mail that Horiko fell for is a series of e-mails that are like a story he has received in the past, he feels a sense of destiny and his heartbeat rises. ...... As he grows into a popular guy in order to win the championship, these small events begin to make each of them realize their love for Horiko.

Even as they become popular with all the girls in the school, their feelings for Horiko lie beyond their own. They are rivals in a sense, but even when they once almost break up, their feelings for Horiko bring them together again. The members, who at first were strangers to each other, eventually develop a friendship as "friends" and spend time together as friends even after the "Mote-men Koshien.

Aki, who had never even been interested in humans, begins to like people.

Tokio, who had always had an aversion to girls, begins to feel for Horiko.

The four have grown up to be "motomen" because of their single-minded love for Horiko. This is another point that makes us want to cheer them on. This change in their feelings is not due to the achievements of their mentor, Shun (......), but because each of them learned about "love" when they met Horiko. The last scene, in which all the members are united, is heartwarming, and the youthfulness of the film is dazzling. Looking at the expressions on everyone's faces, I felt as if I had somehow become completely emotionally involved in the film and was able to relive a coming-of-age experience that I had never had. The theme song "High School Princess" by the Odawara Jyosei High School Motemen's Club, which plays immediately after witnessing such changes, is also wonderful, and the lyrics describing the feelings of the five members are deeply moving. Of course, the insert song "Chain of Love" by High School Children, to which Rikiya Tomizono, who plays Koutarou, belongs, is also a must-see.

The five members of the group are all thinking about Horiko, and Horiko even makes a suggestive remark, "I realized my feelings thanks to Tokio-kun," (......). The changes and growth of the six members should be experienced at the theater.
