PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3" Screenwriters' Roundtable Discussion
Ubukata Tow (Series Composition/Screenplay) x Fukami Makoto (Screenplay) x Yoshigami Ryo (Screenplay)

─ The script for "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3" (hereafter referred to as "PP3") is a collaboration between three writers, so how did you go about creating the script?

Ubukata: The producers and director Naoyoshi Shiotani gave us specific orders, such as making all the characters new and setting the timeline in the year 2120, six years after the second season. We then put together the structure of the series, and the two of you (Fukami and Yoshigami) wrote the scripts.

Fukami: Ubukata-san and director Shiotani worked well together. First of all, I felt that it was already completed within the two of us. The series structure that Ubukata-san put together was very precise. I've never seen such a detailed structure! I had never seen such a detailed structure before! So, my first task was to "make pillars (themes for the episodes) out of that series structure, and write them into a box (to put together the specific elements of the scenes)".

Ubukata: What I thought was great about Fukami-san was that he would take the pitch I threw and bend it back (laughs). (laughs) Characters that weren't in the series structure would come back to me with additions. For example, Obata-chan (Senya Obata, a collaborator of First Inspector Koichi Azusawa) is a character that was born because of Mr. Fukami. Fukami-san's changes are interesting, so we bend them even further and return them to him.

Fukami: After seeing our scenario work, Ubukata-san rewrote the latter half of the series to make it even more interesting.

Ubukata: We would take our best opportunity to throw out some new ideas. I think we were able to work on the script in a good rhythm. It took a long time, though.

Fukami: I was surprised when I read the plot and the series structure that Ubukata-san had created. Everywhere you turn, it's a new "PSYCHO-PASS: Psycho-Pass". The appearance of Bifrost, the setting of the Inspectors. Everyone is a little bit involved in the case, and no one is aware that they are criminals, a trick ....... I think it's interesting.

─ ─ Mr. Yoshigami, you participated in the screenplay for the first time with "PSYCHO-PASS: Sinners of the System Case.1 Crime and Punishment" and this is your first participation in a TV series screenplay.

Yoshigami: I was in charge of the middle episodes, but everyone kept adding ideas and elements at the plotting stage, so the script ended up with a huge number of words.

Ubukata That's Yoshigami-san's habit, isn't it? No matter what he writes, he always manages to turn it into a huge volume.

Fukami Your scripts are more like novels.

Ubukata I understand! I was the same way when I first started writing anime scripts.

Yoshigami: Mr. Ubukata would correct the script down to the smallest detail, and he trained me a lot.

──What kind of character is the main character, Shaku Shindu, Jion Mikhail Ignatov? What are the characteristics of the characters and what attracts you to them?

Ubukata: First of all, Director Shiotani and the producers asked us to change all the characters, and they asked us to come up with two "buddy" characters for the watchers. I think it was also decided from the beginning that the characters would be "buddies," that one of them would be an immigrant and the other would be a childhood friend, and that there would be a height difference between them. From there, I thought about the idea of having a psychologist and a combatant, and proposed the idea of a mentalist (psycho-analyst) and a person with military experience as a "buddy.

Fukami
: When I participated in the first hon-reading (script discussion), Ubukata-san suddenly said to me, "I want to see Shinsuke Shaku and Jiong Mikhail Ignatov written by Fukami-san, so please write the first episode" (laughs). At first glance, Shaku looks flustered, but he is smart. He is a bit of a goofball, but he quickly finds the right answer and runs with it. It was difficult at first.

Ubukata
: If you're not good at it, you end up becoming a jerk.

Fukami:
Ubukata-san said that it's okay to look like a jerk at first.

Ubukata
He's the kind of character who leads the conversation and gets things to go in his own favor, without even realizing it.

Yoshigami
He's a people pleaser, isn't he? In that sense, he's probably the most like a detective.

Ubukata
He's a good detective who gets along well with criminals, gets them to talk a lot, and then arrests them.

─ ─ How interesting is it to be a part of the "PSYCHO-PASS" series?

Fukami: I've always been a big fan of Ubukata-san's novels. The "Mardock" series, the "Spiegel" series, and the period piece ....... Just being in the company of someone like that is very stimulating. I don't want to sound like a smart person, but he's a very smart person (laughs). When I have a meeting with Mr. Ubukata, I have to turn my own head fully. After these meetings, I think it was a very stimulating site that changed the way I looked at the script.

Ubukata
: Being on the set of "PSYCHO-PASS: Psycho-Pass" makes me think that "all creators are crazy" (laughs). (laughs) Of course, that's a compliment, but even Mr. Gen Ufuchi, who worked on the first season, Mr. Fukami, and Mr. Yoshigami are all somewhat out of the ordinary. I think that's why they are able to create something enjoyable.

Yoshigami
: I have loved the works of Ubukata and Fukami since I was a teenager. They have influenced me a lot. It was a great opportunity for me to grow as a person, and as Fukami-san said, it changed the way I read scripts. It was a site where I could say to myself, "Look at this, everyone! It was a site where I could say with certainty, "Everyone, watch this!
