Sein Camus and Shinsuke Kasai took the stage! 4K digitally remastered version of "Farewell Space Battleship Yamato: Warriors of Love" talk show report has arrived!
Starting October 6, 2019, the 45th anniversary of the broadcast of the "Space Battleship Yamato" series, all 13 animated works of the "Yamato" series are being broadcasted at once over a period of three months on the CS broadcast Family Theater. To commemorate this special broadcast, a special preview of "Saraba Uchu Senkan Yamato: Warriors of Love" (released in theaters in 1978), the first 4K digital remastering of the work in its history, was held on Saturday, November 9, 2019, on the big screen.
Sein Camus, a big fan of the "Space Battleship Yamato" series, and former Fuji Television announcer Shinsuke Kasai were on stage for the special preview talk show. The official report has just arrived, and is presented below.
Official report (original text)
As soon as he took the stage, Kasai's microphone did not come on. Realizing that he had forgotten to turn on the microphone, Kasai said, "I've been in the position of host ever since I left Fuji Television and went freelance, so today is the first time I'm not the host of a show! He seemed to be unable to hide his nervousness and excitement at his first guest appearance, a position he was not accustomed to. This guest appearance was the fulfillment of a long-held wish of Kasai, who is also a big Yamato fan. Sein, who took the stage with Kasai, came to Japan in 1977, just as "Space Battleship Yamato" was being broadcast on TV, and became a big fan after watching it in real time.
When the TV series was broadcast, Kasai said, "I used to watch 'Heidi, Girl of the Alps' on Sundays at 7:30, so I was a re-broadcaster. The reruns were broadcast every day, so I watched them like I was devouring them. In that vein, I naturally went to see the movie as well. I went to see the movie with tremendous feelings. Of all the films in the "Space Battleship Yamato" series, "Farewell Space Battleship Yamato" is, without a doubt, my favorite. The story was so perfect that everyone sobbed in the theater. I have a strong memory of that," he said enthusiastically, recalling his feelings at the time.
He continued, "On September 3, 1978 (Sunday), the Shibuya Tokyu Meiga-za Theater was packed to capacity. My cousin made fun of me when he saw me crying during the end roll, but the feeling I had when I saw the movie has remained with me to this day.
This time, the talk event took the form of a "live survey" in which comments were projected on the screen via the public participants' smartphones. When visitors were asked how old they were when they saw the film, many were in their 40s. After various names of favorite characters came up, Kasai said, "My guess is Moriyuki. I was in junior high school at the time, so I would be lying if I didn't like Moriyuki (laughs). The scene where she takes off her clothes is very exciting. The fashion she wore was quite aggressive." Sein also mentioned Moriyuki and talked about his memories of being excited with other guys.
As for the music that plays during the film, Kasai said, "I'm sure many people like 'Space Battleship Yamato' from the music. It is similar to Star Wars in that respect. The dialogue in this series is also impressive, and while looking at the responses of the general participants, Kasai said, "I like the line "My heart is far closer to yours" by Dessler. I think this line is one of the points of return. This film has a charm that makes you feel for the antagonist as well," he praised. Sein said, "I'm like 'Wave Motion Cannon Fire! I still feel the thrill of the energy building up and then being fired.
In response to a question about their real-life married life, Sein said, "I was born in a foreign country, so I express myself in a totally straightforward manner. I tell them too much," he answered confidently, but Kasai replied, "Thirty years ago, we used to tell each other like Ancient and Morisetsu, but now we don't tell each other... (laughs). It's embarrassing, isn't it? (Laughs.) Suddenly, it seems as if I have done something wrong if I tell them.
The TV series was produced on a very tight schedule, so with all due respect, you can see some of the rough edges on the screen. The quality of the film version has been improved, but I think it will be even better, and we will be able to enjoy it in a fresh way. I am very much looking forward to it. I think because I've seen it so many times, the space scenes are long. It is projected geezily. I wonder if we can see the number of stars at that time. I think so," he said with anticipation before the screening. Sein commented on the quality of Japanese animation from a foreign perspective, "Among the animations I have seen so far, Japanese animation is usually made at the Disney level, even though Disney is exceptional. I feel that there is always something of high quality. When I visited Japan as a child, I watched only anime. I was surprised and delighted that there were things that were not live-action that were so interesting! I was so happy and surprised that there were things that were not live-action that were so interesting. Among them, "Space Battleship Yamato" gave me a wonderful feeling of flying off into space. The countdown to the date each episode is filled with a sense of excitement and thrill, and there are many characters that you can relate to, so I thought it was very interesting.
Kasai continued, "Before 'Space Battleship Yamato,' I enjoyed anime as one of the program pictures at the Toei Comics Festival and other events, but the trend of anime from TV series to movies was followed by 'Mobile Suit Gundam,' 'The Super Dimension Fortress Macross' and 'Evangelion. I think "Space Battleship Yamato" is the origin of science fiction anime," he said. "It was a huge hit when it was released, and considering that the latest film is still being made, the "Yamato" culture will continue forever beyond generations," he concluded.
The two then sat down to watch the 4K digitally remastered version of the film with the general public. After the screening, both Kasai and Sein took the stage with tears in their eyes. I was able to see every detail of the battle scenes, and the quality of the close-ups of the characters' expressions and performances were also very clear. Also, Moriyuki's skin is beautiful! The audience applauded as Kasai excitedly cried and talked passionately, recalling the detailed direction depicted in the last scene.
Sein said, "As an adult, I have the pleasure of rewatching the films I saw as a child. I am really glad I was born Japanese (laughs)." He even brought up Kasai's impression of the film from his junior high school days and projected it on the screen, praising it again as "a work that had a great impact on my life and a page from my youth that I don't want to lose. He also said, "The series is supposed to continue, but the last scene of this film is contradictory. However, I'm very proud that they made a 4K remastered version of the film in this version. Kudos to the filmmakers!" The audience applauded in unison, and the film ended on a high note.
