Seiko Tanabe's masterpiece "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish" will be adapted into a theater anime in 2020! Teaser visual and staff information also announced!

It has been decided that "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish" (Kadokawa Bunko) will be adapted into a theater anime in 2020. In addition, a teaser visual and staff information were also released.

Josée, the Tiger and the Fish" is a masterpiece by Seiko Tanabe, an Akutagawa Prize-winning author, which was published in "Monthly Kadokawa" in 1984. The author, Ms. Tanabe, passed away on June 6, 2019, at the age of 91.

The work depicts the pure love between José, who has a bad leg and rarely goes out, and Tsuneo, who has just graduated from college; it was made into a live-action movie in 2003 starring Satoshi Tsumabuki and Chizuru Ikewaki, and attracted a lot of attention.

It has been decided that this masterpiece will be adapted into an animated feature film in 2020. The film will be directed by Kotaro Tamura, assistant director of "Wolf Children's Rain and Snow" and director of the "Noragami" series, written by Sayaka Kuwamura of "Strobe Edge," and character design by Haruko Iizuka of "Yoku x Boku SS" and "Whale Children Sing on the Sand. Animation production will be handled by BONES, creators of "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "My Hero Academia.

Comments from the director, Kotaro Tamura, and the original writer, Seiko Tanabe's office have been received.

Comment from Kotaro Tamura (original text)
I am pleased to finally be able to make an announcement. It has been almost three Chinese zodiac signs since Seiko Tanabe wrote her short story "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish". It is a story that could be found anywhere, but never was. It is my hope that the film adaptation will bring it back into the spotlight as we enter a new era.

■Comments from Seiko Tanabe's office (original in Japanese)
The main character, José, is a girl with a limp who sees the world a little too nastily. By loving others, she opens the doors to the world one by one. The shuddering feeling before opening the door, and the surprise and overflowing joy when the door is opened. I hope that everyone who watches this film will enjoy José's "adventure" with her. I am sure that the original author, Seiko Tanabe, hopes so as well.
