The Iwate performance of the stage "Bungo Stray Dogs: Sansha Kairi" opened today, Saturday, June 8, 2019. Here is the official report and photos from the stage.
Official Report] *Honorifics omitted.
The first stage production of "Bungo Stray Dogs" was staged in December 2017, followed by the second stage production, "Bungo Stray Dogs: The Black Era" in September 2018. The Age of the Black" depicted the story of Osamu Dazai's (Tawada Tomasu) past.
The third work, which will begin today, will be a "trilogy of three companies," as the term "trilogy" implies: the Armed Detective Agency, to which Nakajima Atsushi (Torigoe Yuki) and Dazai belong; the Port Mafia, to which Akutagawa Ryunosuke (Hashimoto Shohei), Nakahara Nakaya (Ueda Keisuke) and others belong; and a new force from overseas, a union led by Francis F. (Kimizawa Yuki) and others. <The three forces, the Port Mafia, to which Ryunosuke (Shohei Hashi), Nakaya Nakahara (Keisuke Ueda), and others belong, and a new force from overseas, the Guild, to which Francis F. (Yuki Kimizawa) and others belong.
The battle of the guilds will take place in the land of Yokohama.
The first to appear on stage is Herman F. (Kento Sunazuka), a "white whale," and Francis, who is talking to his wife in his native country. John S. (Mishin Kawasumi), Lovecraft (Koki Muramatsu), Nathaniel H. (Naoto Katori), Lucy M. (Elizabeth Marie), Margaret M. (Sera Togashi), and Louisa A. (Saya Nagata) followed, and with agile and mysterious dance announced their arrival in Japan. Nakajima and Kyoka Izumi (Izumi Kyoka). While out, Nakajima and Kyoka Izumi (Sakina Kuwae) are attacked by Port Mafia executive Momiji Ozaki (Sera Yumezuki). He sadly admonishes Kyoka to return to Japan, saying that he too once admired the light... but she refuses and goes to battle. Kyoka is sad and wonders if it is right for her to admire the light that Nakajima emits, and disappears. Francis then goes directly to the Armed Detective Agency's headquarters, and when negotiations with the detective agency prove difficult, he reveals his hostility in an unapologetic manner.
The conflict between the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia, and the Guild, a union from a foreign land. The heads of the three companies simultaneously and loudly proclaimed, "It's a war of different abilities! "It's a war of different abilities! and "It's a war of different powers! The story follows the original story, so fans of the original can enjoy the play with ease.
The story follows the flow of the original work, and fans of the original work can enjoy the play with ease.
Stray Dogs" is known for its "otherworldly powers. In this production, the actors' actions, visuals, and ensemble are all used to express the "other powers" in a trinity of ways. For example, in Ryunosuke Akutagawa's "Rashomon," both hands are folded and twisted to manipulate, and hideous black and red thorns appear all over the stage, while a dancer bites and restrains her opponent with a cloth in her hand. John S.'s ability to manipulate plants can also be seen as a "different ability" due to the undulating, plant-like dance, images, and movement of the wood-clad ensemble. Since each ability has different characteristics and ways of expression, one of the highlights of the stage is how the characters battle each other in the large space of the stage, and how they move and how they are resolved.
Thus, in this stage, the movement of the ensemble is also very important in conveying the atmosphere of the work. Not only do they play nameless people who appear outside of the characters, but they sometimes synchronize with the movement of objects and characters' hearts, skillfully representing changes in scenes and emotions. The unique sensibility of the director, Norihito Nakayashiki, is very much responsible for this, and you can sense a strong characteristic in the way he expresses the changes in the scenes.
The production is a masterful example of the unique sensibility of Nakayashiki's direction.
The heads of organizations, such as Yukichi Fukuzawa (Sohei Izumi), Ogai Mori (Akira Kubodera), and Francis F., wear an air of unfathomable presence and intimidation that can only be experienced on stage. The way they look at each other, the way they move their bodies, and the sound of their voices all suggest a different class.
Dazai and Nakaya, who were known as "Futakuro" in the past, are also popular in the original work, and the scene in which they join forces to fight for the recovery of Hisasaku Yumeno (Ayuka Kurachi) is not to be missed. Both Dazai, who often "harasses" Nakaya with his joking mannerisms, and Nakaya, who is constantly snapping at him for his attitude, trust each other's different abilities in battle and defeat a powerful enemy.
In contrast, Nakajima and Akutagawa have faced each other many times. Although different on the inside, they both have dark and painful pasts and have been saved by the same person. Their feelings of hatred and loneliness run deeper than anyone else's and are the driving force for living and fighting. They repeatedly explode with emotion, building up a sense of rebellion against someone they don't understand. Is this confrontation fate, or is it someone's intention? We will have to wait and see what happens next.
Starting in Iwate, a place associated with Kenji Miyazawa, the play will be performed for about a month in five cities: Fukuoka ("Former Residence of Mori Ogai" in Kokura City, Fukuoka Prefecture), Aichi, Osaka, and Tokyo, where Mori Ogai lived.
We hope you will experience how they "live" on stage.
