Is Japanese Anime Distribution in China in a State of Decimation? China's July New Anime and the Showa Ultraman Popularity Situation [Anime Situation of Chinese Otaku].
My name is Baiyuan Kagoyo, and I am introducing this and that about the otaku situation in China.
This time, I would like to introduce trends related to the new Japanese anime of July distributed on Chinese video sites, the changing image of Ultraman in China, and the current popularity and recognition of the Showa Ultraman series.
Finally here? A drastic decrease in the number of new animated films distributed
Since the tightening of regulatory control last year, the distribution of new Japanese anime in China has been frequently delayed and the content has been revised and deleted, and the Chinese otaku community has been asking
Some people in the Chinese otaku community have been asking, "Will the distribution of new Japanese anime disappear in the next season?"
However, as of the end of July when I wrote this column, the number of new Japanese anime titles distributed by bilibili, which has been distributing a large number of new anime titles, seems to be decreasing significantly.
As of the end of July when this column is written, only "Orient", "Black Summoner", "Chimimo", "Tokyo Miu Miu Niu~♡", and "Butchgire! are the only ones that have been distributed.
Chimimo" is also available on several other video sites, but there are almost no new anime for July available on other video sites that distribute Japanese anime at this time.
The current highlight of the July new releases is "Ultraman Decker," which was able to begin distribution with almost no schedule discrepancies with Japan, and Chinese otaku have commented that
The new Ultraman series has been well received and fans are excited about it, but when I look at the situation with the new anime, I feel indescribable.
But when I look at the situation of the new anime, I can't say I'm happy.
In the meantime, looking at bilibili's distribution in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, it seems that new works such as "Overlord" and "Welcome to the Classroom of Meritocracy" are being distributed in China, so it does not mean that they have not acquired licenses.
In addition, the start of distribution of many new works in April, such as "SPY x FAMILY," was delayed, so there are many works that have not yet been distributed in July. Therefore, in China, there are some who believe that "the delay in delivery is being used as it is to buy time for screening and correction work. In China, there are also reports that "the start of distribution has been further delayed due to the increase in the number of episodes that need to be submitted for review," although the truth is not known.
A Chinese geek and industry expert commented on the current situation surrounding video sites in China, saying
In recent years, Chinese video sites that have developed based on the geek market, such as bilibili, have tended to focus more on the general public, which has a large market, rather than on the limited number of geeks.
The tightening of regulatory control over foreign content and the unpredictability of future regulatory trends have made new Japanese anime "unprofitable" in terms of business, and it is inevitable that there will be moves to scale back the distribution of new releases.
These were some of the comments made by the participants.
In fact, the number of new Japanese anime distribution on Chinese video sites is not limited to bilibili, but iqiyi has also experienced a significant decrease in new anime distribution in the past around 2016 and 2019. We do not know what will happen to bilibili's distribution of new Japanese anime in the future, but the current situation in China makes it difficult to be optimistic.
