Camping in Akihabara? If you want to enjoy an extraordinary experience, check out "Campass," a camping practice site.

Akihabara is a town where something changes every day, like a gigantic testing ground. Shun Gori's Akiba Exploration" started with the goal of mapping Akihabara, a city that continues to change in such a hurry. This time, we visited Campass, an amazing facility where you can practice camping in Akihabara, a city in Tokyo.

Campass" just opened on March 19, 2023, and will be open only until the fall.

The facility is located under the elevated Yamanote Line, a 5-minute walk from the Electric Town Exit of JR Akihabara Station on the UDX side. Once you exit the station, simply walk along the elevated Yamanote Line in the direction of Okachimachi to get there, so you are not likely to get lost in Akihabara, where people often get lost if they are not familiar with the area.

There are a total of 14 "camp sites," or places to set up tents, within the Campass facility, and there are three types of sites: small solo sites for those who want to practice camping alone, duo sites for couples or friends, and family sites for large groups or families who want to enjoy the camping atmosphere together. If you want to enjoy camping with a large group or family, you can choose a family site.

In addition to the camp sites, there is a rental corner where you can rent camping equipment and a BBQ corner for plans to enjoy outdoor cooking based on the concept of "quick camp meals in the heart of the city.

All camp sites are located under the JR elevated railway, so it is nice to be able to enjoy the camp without getting wet even on rainy days!

The biggest concern for outdoor activities is "toilets," but this facility has clean toilets for men and women separately, so a comfortable camping experience is guaranteed. However, there are no bath or shower facilities, so visitors are asked to use nearby public bathhouses.

The rental corner is affiliated with the famous camping brand Coleman, and the latest camping equipment is available for rent. The rental equipment includes tents, tarps, chairs, lanterns, and even portable power supplies, making it possible to go camping empty-handed.

Many campers often regret buying camping equipment because they don't know how to use it until they actually try it out. However, at this facility, you can actually rent and use the equipment, so you can try it out here and buy it if you like it.

For those who want to enjoy solo camping, there is a set that includes everything you need, so you can just rent it and be done with it without worrying about it.

For hygiene reasons, sleeping bags are not rented, so if you plan to stay overnight, don't forget to bring your own!

If you have never set up a tent before, don't worry, the staff, who are on duty until 10:00 p.m., will help you set it up.

You can also rent a hammock, so you can enjoy the extraordinary experience of "relaxing in a hammock in the middle of Akihabara.

For those who choose the "EAT" BBQ plan, a dedicated site has been set up so that you can start BBQing right away as long as you bring your own ingredients. There is a "Meat Hanamasa" right next to the facility, so there is no need to even bring your own ingredients!

Water is also available, so you don't have to bring a lot of water, and you can do everything from cooking to washing your hands on site.

For those who do not wish to stay overnight, but just want to enjoy the camping atmosphere, there is a one-day plan called "Day," in which you can rent an inflatable sofa or hammock and spend some time by yourself with the hustle and bustle of Akihabara by your side.

There is also a smoking area and drinking is allowed, but please note that bonfires and fireworks are prohibited because of the location under the elevated JR line, and that real-time broadcasting, loud music, musical instruments, and pets are not allowed. For other detailed terms and conditions of use, please refer to the official page.

Shun Gori enjoys the "extraordinary" experience of camping in Akihabara

For the 14th installment of "Shun Gori's Akiba Exploration," we visited Campass, a camping practice site that just opened on March 19. It is hard to hide our surprise at the fact that a "campsite" facility, which is even more unusual in the extraordinary and different space of Akihabara, has been established, but when we actually use it, we feel a different atmosphere and a certain sense of immorality from camping in the great outdoors, which is addictive. It is interesting to buy manga and other goods in Akihabara, bring them to the tent, and spend the whole night viewing them, or to talk about your favorite characters in the tent with your friends.

We will be adding more Akiba information as we go along, so stay tuned!
