Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the "Emblem of the Star World" anime! The first Blu-ray BOX of the "Hoshikai Series" with all new HD remastering is released today on 12/25!

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the "Hoshikai no Monsho" TV anime broadcast, the first Blu-ray "Hoshikai Complete Blu-ray BOX" of the entire Hoshikai series, newly HD remastered, was released today, December 25, 2019. It is priced at 40,000 yen (excluding tax).

Hoshikai no Monsho" is a science fiction light novel written by Hiroyuki Morioka, and the anime aired from January 2 to March 27, 1999.

Directed by Yasushi Nagaoka, character designer for "DRAGON QUEST - Dai no Daiboken" and "Lupin III: From Russia with Love," series composition and screenplay by Aya Yoshinaga, screenwriter for "Azumanga Daioh" and "Durarara! and "Durarara!"; character design by Keisuke Watanabe, who worked on "Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans" and "Fate/stay night" as an original artist; and animation production by Sunrise.

The story takes place in a far future universe. It is a time when humans have formed thousands of interstellar nations in the universe, and many different species live there. A race called "Irv," who have genetically engineered their bodies to be best suited for outer space, have established a powerful empire, the "Irv Empire of Mankind," which controls half of the universe. The story unfolds based on this worldview.

The first trilogy discussion was realized!

In addition, to commemorate the release of the Blu-ray BOX, a trilogy talk was held for the first time between Hiroyuki Morioka, the author of the original story, Yasushi Nagaoka, the director of the anime, and Koichiro Yonemura, the author of the comic book adaptation. The three discussed "Hoshikai" from their respective perspectives in the novel, anime, and comics, and the contents are sure to be coveted by fans.

The following is an excerpt (original in Japanese).

Morioka: As a novelist, when there are pictures in a manga or anime, it is easy for me to understand what the world is like. It is strong to have people see it at a glance. I think it's powerful to have people see it. It is quite difficult to write about it in text. It is difficult for people to understand if you write about it too much, and if you write about it too much, the story won't progress.
I was envious of manga and anime in that respect, but you're right, you can't draw a picture without setting it all up (laughs).
With novels, you can't draw until you've set up the parts that you don't have to write, or you wouldn't even think of that.

Yonemura: However, it is not only the detailed explanation of the setting and design that shows the expansion of the worldview, but also the expression that gives the impression that this is how the world is! I am conscious of prioritizing the accurate depiction of these scenes in my novels.

Nagaoka: Nowadays, the hurdle is not so high because of the development of filming technology, but 20 years ago, everything was hand-drawn, so mob scenes, whether of people or battleships, were a tremendous obstacle. When I would place an order, I would get questions like, "I'll draw it, but what kind of clothes are you wearing? I would get questions like, "I'll draw it, but what kind of clothes are they wearing?
Then I had to create a setting that asked, "What kind of clothes are all the people in the spaceport wearing? I had to create a setting that asked, "What kind of clothes do all the people in the spaceport wear? What kind of people are there before the clothes? And so on. How much effort do we have to put into a single frame with, say, 30 passersby, but how much effort do we have to put into that cut, which is treated as a background? That's the kind of world we live in.

Yonemura: That's right. I also wrote the seventh volume of the comic book about the anti-imperial Clasbure Front, which consists of, let's see, Min, Malka, Daswani, Bill, and the undertaker... five people, right? I guess. These five people are somewhere on the screen, and I draw them because it would be bad if it were only close-ups of Rafiel and Jinto in the scenes where the conversation continues.

Nagaoka: I understand. If you are not conscious of what is outside the frame, you end up with a "narrow picture. I think the impression the audience gets depends on how conscious you are of what they can't see.
