Before explaining each work, it should be noted that most of the votes in this year's poll were concentrated on two works, No. 1 and No. 2. Since it is rare to see such a result in general, it is assumed that many organizational votes were cast, but the result was a heated one-on-one battle.
The winner of the dead heat was " Love Live! Sunshine! The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow," which was released in January 2019. The "Love Live! series' popularity is heating up, but this film was also a hit, with many Love Livers literally rushing to movie theaters as soon as it opened, earning over 1 billion yen at the box office (even though the previous film "Love Live! The School Idol Movie" earned over The School Idol Movie", which grossed over 2.2 billion yen). The School Idol Movie" earned over 2.2 billion yen at the box office. ) This time, as a result of the organized votes of many Love Livers, the film received a massive 12,500 votes to become the No. 1 movie in the world. How long will this "Love Live! will continue for how long? What an amazingly haunted content.
This "Love Live! Sunshine! The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow," was " Dragon Quest Your Story, " which was released in August 2019 as a summer vacation movie. With 1,222 votes received, the haunted content "Love Live! which can be said to be a monster content. Needless to say, this ambitious work is a 3DCG recreation of the world of "Dragon Quest," a major Japanese RPG series that continues to be a mega-hit. In particular, the film attracted a great deal of attention as a recreation of the story of "Dragon Quest V: Bride of the Sky," which still divides opinion among fans as to who should marry whom. In terms of box-office revenue, the film seems to have been somewhat sluggish at around 1.4 billion yen, but in this poll, it attracted a large number of organizational votes and came in an impressive second place.
The above two films received the largest number of votes, but let's take a closer look at the films ranked third and below.
The third-place winner, " Hakuubo," is an original work by director Hiroshi Yamamoto, a.k.a. "Yamakan. It is the final chapter of the "Tohoku Trilogy," which follows the director's short animation "blossom" and the hit idol animation "Wake Up, Girls! Director Yamamoto, who is always in the news, has been the talk of the town for his use of crowdfunding to raise money for the production of this film, as well as for his repeated production delays. The story is a coming-of-age tale set in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Although only a limited number of cinemas screened the film, and it is likely that only a limited number of people actually went to the theaters, the film was well received by animation fans.
Following in fourth place was " Violet Evergarden Gaiden - Eternity and the Auto-Telegram Doll," produced by Kyoto Animation. Although it is still fresh in our minds, just before the screening of this film in September, Kyoto Animation's company building was tragically set on fire, and some of the staff involved in the production of this film were killed in the arson attack. Although the TV series had originally been highly acclaimed, the incident is believed to have brought many animation fans to the theater. The film was also highly acclaimed on movie websites, and in a sense, it became a work that represented last year's 2019. Another Kyoto Animation film, "Sound the Sound, the Movie! Euphonium ~Oath Finale~," which was also released in April, also ranked in 9th place.
In fifth place was "Seishun Butayaku wa Yumemiru Shoujo no Yume wo Yume wo Mimiru " released in June. This may seem like a surprising work, but it is actually a highly acclaimed movie. It is a sequel to "Seishun Butayaku wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Yume wo Mimiru" which was broadcast as a TV animation the previous year. Since this work is based on a novel with complicated foreshadowing, various mysteries that were not easily solved in the TV anime series have been successfully solved in this work. The story also deals with a very heavy theme, and many people were said to have had their teary glands collapsed.
In sixth place was " Bless This Wonderful World! Red Legend " released in November. It is an original theatrical work based on the popular TV anime "Konosuba. The animation production was changed from Studio Deen of the TV version to J.C. STAFF, but most of the other main staff remained the same, creating a work that is both very funny and very tearful while maintaining the momentum of the TV version.
The seventh-placed " HELLO WORLD " is an original animated feature film directed by Tomohiko Ito, who worked as an assistant director on the popular animated film "Summer Wars" and directed "Sword Art Online -Ordinal Scale-". It is a science fiction coming-of-age love story set in Kyoto in the near future, and in a sense, it is a good rival to Makoto Shinkai's much talked-about "The Weather Child," which came in eighth place.
Its " Weather Child " became a blockbuster hit following Shinkai's previous film "Kimi no na wa," which grossed over 14 billion yen at the box office and became the No. 1 most popular film in Japan in 2019. Although it did not fare as well in the ranking, coming in at No. 8 in this year's poll, it is still one of the most popular animated films of 2019.
Lastly, " Kinder Senki the Movie, " ranked 10th, is a completely original work that is a sequel to the TV version of "Kinder Senki," which was broadcast in 2017 and gained great popularity. The main staff members from the TV version have been retained, and just as in the TV version, the film received high acclaim for its powerful and breathtaking battle scenes on the big screen.
The year 2019 was also a very productive year for anime films, with many hits including mega-hits such as "Weather Child" and "Detective Conan: The Dark Blue Fist. Some films did not do well at the box office, but there were still many highly acclaimed films that left a lasting impression. We hope you will take a look at the results for the 11th place and below to find out which films you enjoyed the most.
