───Please tell us how you felt when the movie was decided.
The TV series ended after 10 episodes, so it was shorter than other productions, but everyone was giving it their all and working with a great sense of intensity, and there was a great bond between the cast, so the recording sessions were very intense. That's why I was sad to see the last episode end! That's why I was sad to see the last episode go! I was so sad about the final episode! We talked about how it would be great if we could do it again, so I was really happy when the decision was made to make a movie. However, a movie would be different from the past. I actually thought "Konosuba" was suited for a movie. First of all, the music is really cool, and there were some cool fight scenes in the final episodes of both the first and second seasons, so I was really looking forward to seeing them in the movie!
─ So you thought the TV series was suited for a movie! There was a strong sense of slapstick comedy, though.
It was a slapstick comedy! I was so excited to see the movie! What can I say, I was surprised at the first episode. The music was spectacular in contrast to the stupidity of the interaction between Aqua and Kazuma! It was really cool. I felt this even more when I participated in the orchestra concert this year. I was only able to listen to one song in the audience, and the rest I had to listen to in the sleeves, but even with that, it was really great.
─ How was the postrecording for the movie?
At first, there was a sense of tension that I had never felt before because it was a movie, but in no time at all I was back to my usual atmosphere. Some of the cast members hadn't seen me in a while, but I didn't feel that way at all, like I was "back at my parents' house" (laughs). From the middle of the show, I was quite relaxed and enjoying myself. If other people do something unexpectedly funny in the test, I can't lose! Like that. And even in the test and the real thing, more and more people do totally different things. They would suddenly do something out of the ordinary, and everyone would look down and try to hold back their laughter.
I would like to see that scene.
It's really interesting! Both the test and the performance are interesting. But Kazuma-san seemed to have a hard time. He was almost shouting all the time. I watched him while thinking, "Please be careful not to hurt your throat during the test," but Kazuma was giving it his all the whole time. ......
─ ─ I think you will be able to enjoy the slapstick atmosphere in the movie.
I think it has all the coolness and that feeling of being an idiot. Basically, it is a story about the village of Red Devil, so Kazuma, Megumi, and Yunyun are the main characters, but there is a slapstick feel to it.
─ ─ What do you think is the highlight of the story, Amemiya?
I think it was Kazuma. At first, Jun Fukushima was very nervous and worried, but he was really surprisingly funny! He has a lot of scenes and there is a long monologue by Kazuma alone, but I didn't know monologues could be so funny. It's like, how interesting can a monologue be? I never got tired of listening to her talk by herself, and I was surprised that she could make me laugh so hard, so that was a highlight.
─ ─ I also heard that you ate a lot during recording.
The bento box lunches were very sumptuous, and the four party members would sit around a desk by a sunny window and eat sushi together. We talked about "Konosuba" while enjoying the meal. We also received a pizza in the middle of the party, and I ate a lot of it, so I got a lot of flak for that.... I was told that the postrecording takes a lot of energy!
─ ─ And then we recorded the ending theme song "My Home Town.
I thought that a theme song for a movie is usually just one song, so I thought that Machico would sing it. I thought it would be nice if there was one, but I tried not to get my hopes up. Then I was happy to hear that the three of us could sing together again this time.
─ ─ And again, it is a Humbert Humbert song.
This song is full of a hometown feeling, isn't it? It has a nostalgic feeling. It is a very warm and heartwarming song, and when I listen to it when I am tired, it brings tears to my eyes. And now, I feel like this is the ending of "KonoSuba"! I think it is now the ending of "Kono-subi. It's amazing that it has become so well established in everyone's mind. I think the initial image of "Kono-suba" was of a lot of chaos and slapstick, but when this calm song is played at the ending, everything becomes lighthearted, even though there was a lot of stupid stuff going on. It was a good story today.
─ ─ You might be fooled by that (laughs). How did you feel when you heard the song?
I was very happy to feel like I was back home. I am from Tokyo, so I don't have a hometown like a hometown, but the song still made me feel nostalgic, and it was just like "Konosuba". And since I was last in the recording order, I was thrilled to be the first to hear all three of us singing together.
─ ─ What were you particular about during the recording?
When I heard the song, I felt a little sad, as I always do. When I actually listened to their voices, Megumi sang in a lonely way, as if she was thinking of her hometown. That's what I love about her, because it shows her clumsy childishness. And Daknes is like a really sweet older sister, and she is a knight, so her singing voice was like that of a well-brought-up girl. And I felt a bit lonely, so I wanted to sing Aqua as if she was smiling. So I was conscious of not making it too dark.
───Did you have a hard time finding the right balance between the brightness and the tempo?
The tempo was slow. Even so, I felt that Aqua had to carry the brightness. So I tried to bring out the brightness by singing the words clearly, even when it seemed like I was singing along with the flow. But basically, I wanted to keep my voice gentle, so I practiced at home. I recorded both the gentle voice and the way of singing, emphasizing Aqua-like words and adding highs and lows, to see which would be better.
─ ─ Do you record them?
Basically. Then I work out what kind of approach I want to take. For a character song like "Watashi Ondo," I can go all out in my Aqua style, but for a song like this, I try to imagine how Aqua would feel and how she would interpret the song. I thought that she would probably sing it softly.
─ So you had to think that far ahead, respond to the direction, and balance the three of you! That's amazing. Finally, do you have a message for those who are looking forward to the film?
When I heard that you did not play "My Home Town" in the trailers, I thought it was wonderful. I think the relationship between the two will be enhanced because of the film and the song. I think the people who come to the theater are people who love "Konosuba" that much, so I would be happy if they could listen to the song in its best condition.
─ ─ From your point of view, did you think this ending was a good fit for the story you learned during the postrecording?
I felt that the ending flowed very well during the post recording. I think a lot of people will cry. It seems strange to cry at the "Konosuba" movie, but I think the storyline and this song will make people cry. I can imagine that, and I would like to have that experience in the movie.
─ ─ And I hope we will meet again next time.
Yes, that's right! I want to play Aqua as long as my physical strength lasts. I have to work hard because it's quite a physical challenge, but it's a really fun and deeply loving site, so I'd like to keep playing "Konosuba" for as long as I can.
[Part 2 of the post-recording interview! Riyo Takahashi (Megumin)]
───Please tell us how you felt when the movie was decided.
After the second season ended, I thought that it would be the end for me to play the roles of everyone in "Konosuba" and to interact with them like this, so I was very sad. That is why I was more than happy when I heard that the new film was going to be made! I cried so hard that I think it was the first time I cried so hard as an adult. Then I heard about the movie and that it would be set in the "Red Devil's Village," and I couldn't help but be really excited about it!
─ That's also Megumi's birthplace.
I'm grateful for that, but first of all, I was happy just to be able to go on an adventure with everyone again. But it was a good opportunity for me to be on duty. I also wanted people to know more about Megumi's character and her charms, so I thought it would be great if this episode could reach everyone. I wanted to let people know that she is not just a joke character or a joke magician! I thought it would be a good chance for people to know that she is not just a joke character or a joke magician.
─ I heard that you have already finished the recording for the movie.
There were some very emotional scenes. When I read the script, I thought, "I really want to make this scene a success! When I read the script, I thought to myself, "I want this scene to be a success! It was not about how I wanted the scene to be received by the audience, but about how I thought I had to engrave the proof of Megumi's life here, and I thought she would shine brighter with this scene. That is why I wanted to preserve her way of life. It was a fresh feeling to want to make the scene a success.
─ ─ In "Konosuba," the party goes to various places, so you feel like you are traveling together.
Alkanretia, the headquarters of the Axis cult that appeared in the second season, was quite impressive, but the Red Devil's Village was also quite impressive (laugh), so I thought that we should go to a more appropriate place for a vacation. I don't think the Red Devil's Village will disappoint you this time either! Also, the cast is gorgeous, so please pay attention to the end message.
─ How was the recording of the movie?
Instead of practicing Megumi at home, I felt that I became Megumi most when I heard the voices of the other three members of the party in front of the microphone. I was still happy to be able to do the dialogue with all of them together. I once heard from a senior colleague that when tuning in a character you haven't played in a while, it's good to call her by the name of the person you used to call her. Also, this time we went out to eat after the recording session. We had a party where we all ate meat together! It was a two-day postrecording session, so we refrained from drinking on the first day, thinking about the next day, but it was fun to be together for two days, like a training camp.
─ ─ In movies, recording is sometimes divided into several days, so there is also a boxed lunch.
The food and bento boxes prepared by the sound production staff were absolutely gorgeous! Roast beef bowls, sushi sets, pork cutlet bowls, etc. It would be great if we could have such bento! It was so warm and kind of them to prepare so many things that I thought "wouldn't it be great if I had such a lunch box?
───And the ending theme "My Home Town" was composed by Humbert Humbert Humbert, just like in the previous TV series. The song made me nostalgic for my hometown, but the singers seem to be from the Kanto area.
That's right. I am also from Saitama, so it might be hard to call it a homecoming.
─ ─ If Jun Fukushima, who plays Kazuma, heard this song, he might cry, right?
Indeed! Jun is from Ehime, isn't he? I hope this song reaches him.
─ How did you feel when you sang the song?
This is the fourth song that Mr. Humbert Humbert has written for us, and this time I almost cried while singing. But if I cried, I wouldn't be Megumi, so I tried not to cry. ...... (laughs). The direction of the song was "not to force emotion on the audience, but to give a sense of homecoming and life-size from Megumi's point of view," so I did my best.
─ ─ It may not sound like an anime song, but it fits the world view very well.
I was surprised at the beginning of the first season because I didn't expect this kind of tune, but it is easy to imagine and easy to sing. The direction for this song was to use a "back-riding rhythm," and that fits the work well, and after reading the script of the movie, I can picture the scene very well.
─ ─ The lyrics are also great.
The lyrics are also very good. The lyrics are all over the place, and many of them make me want to think back on various scenes, so I don't want you to listen to them before you see the movie! I want people to listen to this song after seeing the movie, and I feel like it was written for the movie.
─ You mentioned earlier that the lyrics were not for anyone, but the lyrics were more emotional for Megumi, weren't they?
There is a difference between a character song and a theme song such as the ending song. If the lyrics of a character song overflow from the inside, then the theme song represents the work itself. For the ending song, I wanted to recall the atmosphere of the Red Devil's Village, so Megumi said it would be okay if I used more theatrics in the song. So I made it a little bit more like a character song as a sentiment.
─ ─ The last part of the lyrics was very important to me.
The same melody is repeated, "I'm going home today, I'm going home, I'm going home properly, see you next time. That is why I am so glad that we recorded the song after the post recording. I thought it would be totally different from recording before the post recording.
─ I was wondering about the illustration of Megumi that was spread out on the table, were you singing while looking at it?
Yes, I was. Whenever I sing with Megumi, I always sing with the character's material on the music stand. This is also from the audition, so it is not in color, but I have been using it for about four years now, so I think it is time to get a colored illustration (laughs). But when I see them smiling with such big mouths open, they support the song. I look at the collection of facial expressions and use them to create an image so that when the sound is played, the image comes to life.
─ ─ Finally, please tell us about the highlights of the film and give us a message.
You may wonder what a "Konosuba" movie on the new stage of theaters ...... will be like, but rest assured that the "Konosuba" you know and love will be back, and you should definitely see it! If you come to the theater, you will find the usual "Konosuba" members waiting for you there, so please come to the theater and meet them! We'll be waiting for you.
