Director Tomino is a cute guy! Yutaka Izubuchi and Ryota Fujitsu talk about "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char of the Counterattack" & report on the 4DX version of "Gyakusha Char!
The "Gundam Video New Experience TOUR" will begin on September 13, 2019, with screenings of past "Mobile Suit Gundam" series theatrical works in various formats that are not bound by default concepts on the latest screening systems "4DX," "ULTIRA," and "DOLBY CINEMA™" at theaters nationwide. The current films being screened are "Mobile Suit Gundam" series theatrical works.
The films currently being screened are "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char of the Counterattack" and "Mobile Suit Gundam NT". Starting with these two films, the project is scheduled to continue through 2020.
Editor A, a Gundam freak for 30 years, experienced the 4DX version of "Gyakusha Shaa" in order to have a new Gundam experience that cannot be had in the usual screening format! Here are some of the highlights.
Will you survive? 4DX "Gyakushaia" Experience Report
First of all, let me explain what 4DX is.
To quote from the official website of the "Gundam New Visual Experience Tour
The motion seats move back and forth, up and down, left and right in conjunction with the movie scene, and a total of 20 special effects such as rain, water, wind, and flash are generated one after another in the entire theater.
This is a sensory attraction theater that allows visitors to feel as if they are the main character in a movie, and to shift from "watching a movie" to "experiencing a movie.
That is to say, the characters are experienced on the screen.
In other words, it is a system that allows you to simulate what the characters are experiencing on the screen.
So, we entered the theater and took our seats. The first thing I felt was that "4DX seats are just like linear seats (......)! (Linear seats are the pilot's seats of the mobile suits in "Gyakushaia"). The armrests look like arm rakers that pilot mobile suits, and the seat that completely covers from the upper body to the head looks like the seat of the Nu Gundam! I was already excited.
When the main story begins, it starts with the battle between the Londo Bell team and the Neo Zeon army over the meteorite Fifth Luna. When the Ri-Gazi piloted by Amuro moves around at high speed, the seats also move with a whirring sound, and when they pass through a barrage of enemy bullets, gusts of wind blow from the front and back, grazing their cheeks.
Is this the battle of the Newtype?
Yes, the 4DX version of "Gyakushaia" simulates the battle that Amuro experiences!
As many of you may already know, "Gyakushaia" is an action-packed movie with about half of its running time spent in battle scenes. Especially from the middle of the movie, nuclear missiles fly, high-speed funnels engage in dogfights, and the Nu Gundam and Sotheby's wrestle each other. The more the story progresses, the more serious the 4DX seats become.
When nuclear missiles explode, hot air hits you, and when the Axis' nuclear nozzles erupt, a fierce gust of wind blows. When the funnels fly around at ultra-high speed, the seat also moves up and down in a great movement. When a beam saber pierces the abdomen of a Jegan, the back of the Jegan is suddenly pushed back into place.
As the story reaches its climax, we are treated to one of the most famous scenes in the film. The scene unfolds as the Federation and Neo Zeon mobile suits work together to push back the Axis as it crashes to the earth.
As the scene depicts the mobile suits operating their thrusters at full capacity while enduring the frictional heat and shock, hot air blows over the audience, the seats shake violently, and the flashes light up the theater with intense flicker. On the screen, Amuro is slipping off his seat, and it looks like he might slip off too if he doesn't hold on to his feet!
No wonder even the New Types can't survive. ......
The movie ends with a sense of the intensity of the Second Neo Zeon War. The ending theme song, "Beyond the Time," was even more poignant than usual, and it must have been because I was in sync with the feelings of Captain Bright, who survived the battle for the fate of the Earth.
I have rewatched "Gyakushaare" more times than I can count, but this 4DX version was a completely new "Gyakushaare" experience unlike any other. In the past, I had the image of taking my time to appreciate the story, theme, and direction, but the 4DX version is, in a word, "Don't think, just feel! In other words, "Don't think, feel! The act of synchronizing with Amuro and experiencing mobile suit battles is exciting and fun without question!
That's right. Gundam is the coolest and most interesting robot animation and entertainment film ever made, and I think it reminded me of the obvious. As I write this article, remembering the time I watched it, I feel like my butt is still floating in the air. When it was over, those two raging hours were unforgettable.
......4DX, isn't it fun?
Reporter A is now planning to try the 4DX version of "NT" .......
A report on the stage greeting where Director Tomino's cute episodes were also shown.
On September 16, a stage greeting by Yutaka Izubuchi (mobile suit designer) and Ryota Fujitsu (anime critic) was held after the screening to commemorate the release of the 4DX version of "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack".
Mr. Fujitsu commented on the 4DX version of "Gyakusha Shaa," saying, "There are no movies that have such a cockpit-like atmosphere, so I think this movie is suited for 4DX. He also commented, "The battle at the beginning of the movie was very interesting. He also commented, "In the beginning of the battle scene, when Amuro's movement slows down, the seat shakes and the audience can feel the movement of the character.
Mr. Izubuchi said that when "Gyakushaia" was first released, he was not sure about it and his initial impression of it was terrible, but after rewatching it many times, he found new discoveries and fun things about it. Initially, Hideaki Anno, known for his work on the "Evangelion" series, also had a negative impression of the film, but after rewatching it again and again, his opinion changed to "It's the best! He also shared a behind-the-scenes story about how he changed his opinion and created the now legendary fanzine.
He also shared a "cute" episode of director Yoshiyuki Tomino during the production of "Gyakushaare. When he commented on the scene in which Quesu jumps out into outer space alive, he said, "He's going to die, isn't he?" At first, he replied, "Even NASA says it's okay if you hold your mouth and ears when you jump out! You don't know anything! But on the way home that day, he asked her again, "What was it you said earlier that bothered you so much?" On the way home that day, he was asked again, "Do you really care that much about what I said earlier? When Mr. Izubuchi answered "Yes," he slid away with the words "...... tease" and disappeared behind the door. At that moment, Mr. Izubuchi recounted an episode in which he reconfirmed to the audience that "this person is cute.
After that, the audience was excited about topics such as what happened to Char and Amuro after the war. and other topics, and the greeting ended.
It was an intense 30 minutes of rare episodes by Mr. Izubuchi, who knew the scene at that time, and a talk full of implications by Mr. Fujitsu, an animation critic.
The 4DX versions of "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack" and "Mobile Suit Gundam NT" will be screened until September 26. Please check the official website of United Cinemas for the screening locations.
