Official comment by Hiroki Kaji as Shindo Shakurugi

This is the culmination of "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3" and a story that is uniquely Shinji Shakaku's.

─ ─ Finally, the story of "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3" will be completed with "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3 FIRST INSPECTOR". First of all, what are your thoughts on the TV anime "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3" that aired from October 2019?

I have the impression that "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass" is a work that has challenged new ways of depicting each series. This time, the broadcast time was expanded to one hour, and the drama was fully depicted because of the length of the episode. The length was double the usual length, and while tremendous effort was put into the production, no corners were cut in the action scenes, and the fighting techniques were thoroughly researched and produced. (There was even some parkour for Shaku. There was also a new expression called "mental tracing," and the series really challenged us in many ways. At the same time, this time, Shaku and Jion (Mikhail Ignatov) are buddies in some ways, so I think it may have a strong impression as a "detective drama.

PSYCHO-PASS: Psycho-Pass" is a story about an elite "Observer," a member of the Public Security Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division, and an "Enforcer," a potential criminal, who team up to pursue criminals. What is your impression of the newly appointed supervisory officer (shindo) Shakaku, played by Mr. Kaji?

I had the consistent impression that Shaku is "a person who believes in the potential of human beings. He said, "A marshal is not a shield, but a human being" (episode 8), and despite the near-future worldview, I feel that Shakaku has a good sense of humanity, such as humanity and guts. However, when you look at Shaku's profile, he is not easy to get to know (laugh). This is clearly reflected in the attitude of the enforcers in the beginning... At first, people around him did not open up to him, and there was a part of him that was wary of him. But gradually, he gained their trust through his own words and actions. As the episodes progressed, Shaku's feelings were conveyed to those around him. In the end, I was very happy to see that the Detective Section became a solid team.

─ What did you think of your buddy partner Jiong?

I feel that Jiong is a different kind of professional from Shaku. He cares a lot about his wife Mai-chan (Maiko Maya Stronskaya)... He is really attractive as a human being, including the fact that he becomes a little confused when she gets involved in an incident. In episode 7, they clashed due to some differences, but I believed that their relationship would not collapse so easily.

The first episode of "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3: FIRST INSPECTOR" will feature a confrontation with Koichi Azusaizawa, the first inspector of the mysterious organization "Bifrost. What was your impression of the story of "FIRST INSPECTOR"?

Azusawa (Koichi) was a mysterious character in the TV series, but we finally get to know him in "FIRST INSPECTOR". I thought it was very interesting that the story intersects three different ways of thinking: Shaku, Azusawa, and the Sibylla System that manages this world. The Sibular System is a supposedly "perfect" entity that manages people's mental states by quantifying them. In contrast, humans are "imperfect" beings who are unstable and behave in unpredictable ways. I was very impressed with the assertions and relationships between the two as depicted in this work.

Shaku has a good relationship with Karina Komiya, the new governor of Tokyo, in the TV series. The future of the relationship between her and Shaku is also a highlight.

I think Shaku is interested in Karina herself. She seems to be a "perfect person" in a different way from the Sibula System, and I think that's what interested me. But when we first talked, there was something strange about her... Eventually, what I began to see was the part of her that was not perfect. I think that is what attracted me to him. And after talking to him again after the turmoil, I think he felt that he was the right person to take the lead.

─ ─ Finally, "FIRST INSPECTOR" will be released in theaters. How do you hope people will enjoy this film?

I am sure that those who have seen the TV series have been wondering about many things...they have been in a state of "postponement" (laugh). (Laughs) We were also concerned about Rokugozuka-san, who had an accident at the end of episode 8.... FIRST INSPECTOR" will be released in full force as the resolution to the series of incidents that have been depicted so far. I am sure that this will be a story that will be a scorcher, just like "PSYCHO-PASS Psycho-Pass 3", so please enjoy this culmination of the series.
