Higurashi When They Cry" was first released as a doujin game in 2002, and its fascination with solving puzzles and its bizarre scenario spread by word-of-mouth, leading to its porting to consumer game consoles, comic book adaptation, anime adaptation, live-action movie adaptation, stage adaptation, and various other media development.
