Commemorating the release of the PC Engine mini! PC Engine favorite writers have selected 10 carefully selected titles that are "still fun! We have selected 10 carefully selected titles!

It's been two weeks since the release of "PC Engine mini" on March 19, 2020 (......).
To commemorate the release of "PC Engine mini," we will introduce "10 recommended titles" that our writer SUKESAN, who loves "PC Engine" so much, came up with after much deliberation!

The PC Engine was a consumer game console released on October 30, 1987, and was jointly developed by NEC and Hudson (now KONAMI).

The machine specs made it impossible to reproduce high-performance arcade games as they were, and even when they were ported, the action games were often turned into board games, or big characters were replaced by comical mini-characters, and so on. The number of times the game has been ported has been countless. ...... There were some titles that did their best to recreate the arcade versions, but they tended to be something different.

Then along came the "PC Engine," with its revolutionary graphics performance for its time.

Looking back on the appeal and achievements of the PC Engine!

One of the titles released shortly after launch was "Bikkuriman World," featuring all the popular characters from Lotte's "Bikkuriman Chocolates," which were extremely popular among children at the time. Other unique titles include "THE KOUGOU," which is said to have the largest character size in the history of side-scrolling action games.

Another title that took game fans by surprise was "R-TYPE," a port from an arcade game that took advantage of high graphics performance. Although there were pros and cons to porting the game by splitting the Hu card into two cards due to capacity issues, it was a near-perfect port that was said to be impossible on consumer consoles, and it created quite a stir.

This was followed by the historic peripheral "PC Engine CD-ROM2," the first CD-ROM player in the history of video games, and a series of releases that took advantage of the CD's large capacity for animated images, realistic music, and sound.

The "Tengai Makyo" series is probably the most representative of these. The "Tengai Makyo" series is a prime example of such a series, with a huge volume that takes dozens of hours to complete, abundant animation, and gorgeous voice acting. The theme music was composed by famous composers, and everything was overwhelming.

The PC Engine was a hardware that had a tremendous impact on game expression in that it brought gorgeous visual expression and sound to games through the use of large amounts of data.

Peripherals that upgraded the hardware, such as the "SUPER CD-ROM2" and "Arcade Card," were subsequently released, and new titles continued to be released for 12 years until the release of "Dead of the Brain 1 & 2" in 1999, making it a very long-lived piece of hardware.

PC Engine mini review!

So, finally, let's open the PC Engine mini!

The power switch is the same as on the actual console, and can be turned on by sliding it.

There are two USB ports for connecting the controller.

Note that the Hu card cannot be inserted!

The controller is the same size as the original one. Therefore, I was able to hold it firmly and did not feel any discomfort while playing.
Also, it should be noted that the cables are much longer than those of that time. This is probably a consideration for the modern age, taking into account the larger size of TVs.

The terminals used for connecting peripheral devices such as CD-ROM2 on the actual PC Engine are now used for the HDMI output port and power connector.

Game selection is stress-free! You can tell the title of the game at a glance.

Also, by pressing "RUN" and "SELECT" during play, you can enter the menu screen and save anywhere. The icon of the external recording unit "Heavenly Voice" is the best!

The screen's aspect ratio, etc. can be changed to suit modern monitor conditions. The PC Engine GT screen on the far right is too maniacal! ("PC Engine GT" was a portable game console released on the first day in 1990.)

(PC Engine GT was a portable game console first released in 1990.) When you select a title, you enter the startup screen, and the presentation of the CD-ROM2 title is very clever! Even the sound of the spinning CDs is reproduced. Just looking at this presentation is enough to make you grin.

As you can probably tell from reading this far, I have an endless amount of things to say about the PC Engine, but this time I'll start with the editorial department,

I was asked by the editorial department to introduce 10 recommended titles from the entire collection, and to be honest, I had a hard time deciding which ones to recommend.

To give you an idea of how much trouble I went through, I played through all the titles again and agonized over them for several days.

As a result, I was able to decide between my subjective view that "It's fun to play now!" and (sorry) (sorry), and their importance in the history of video games, I came up with the 10 titles listed on the next page.

Those who know the games of that time will be nostalgic, and those who have not yet played them will think, "I didn't know such games existed! I hope that those who know the games of that time will be nostalgic, and those who have not yet played them will read them with the thought, "I didn't know such games existed!
