Sony Interactive Entertainment today unveiled the first visuals of DualSense, a wireless controller for PlayStation 5, today, April 8, 2020.

The development vision of the DualSense wireless controller, unveiled ahead of the PlayStation 5 launch scheduled for the 2020 holiday shopping season, is a dialogue with "the world created by games. The controller is designed to appeal to the player's five senses to create a highly immersive gaming experience.

In order to inherit features such as the "SHARE" button, which was well-received on the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller for PlayStation 4, DualSense has retained the appeal of the DUALSHOCK 4 while adding new features and designing a comfortable and easy-to-play experience.

■DualSense allows for more realistic enjoyment of feel.
In particular, the company believes that the sense of touch, like audio, is an area full of possibilities in game play, and has adopted technologies that allow users to enjoy the sensation of touch, such as haptic feedback that conveys the feel of the game. This allows users to experience the heavy, chunky feel of a car driving on a muddy road, for example.

In addition, the DualSense L2 and R2 buttons are equipped with adaptive triggers, which allow the user to feel a sense of tension like when drawing a bow and arrow.
With the adaptive triggers, they went through a trial-and-error process to keep the necessary components within the hardware while making them feel thicker when gripped. In designing the trigger and actuators, the appearance of the controller was determined so that it would fit comfortably in the hand. In addition, the angle of the trigger was changed, adjustments were made to the grip, and various other innovations were made to extend DualSense's operating time and reduce weight.

■ "Create" button instead of "SHARE" button.
DualSense is not equipped with a SHARE button, as is the case with DUALSHOCK 4, but that does not mean that functionality is lost. A new "Create" button is being developed that will allow users to create content based on their own gameplay and share it with the world. More details will be announced at a later date.

■Chat is possible even without a headset.
DualSense also has a built-in microphone, making it easy to chat with friends without a headset. This is very convenient when having a quick conversation during a game. Of course, a headset can also be used for longer conversations.

■DualSense design uses two colors
While previous generations of basic controllers have used a single color, DualSense uses two colors. The light bar has also been repositioned for easier visibility; in DUALSHOCK 4, the light bar is located above the controller, but in DualSense, it is equipped on both sides of the touchpad.

The goal of DualSense was to create an immersive experience as if you were in the game world the moment you pick it up out of the box. The goal was to create a controller that would make you forget that you are even holding it while playing a game.
