Key visual from Netflix original animation "Sinking of Japan" to be released in summer 2020! The film will be screened at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2020!

A key visual from the anime "The Sinking of Japan 2020," which will be distributed as a Netflix original anime series in the summer of 2020, has been released. The film will be the only Japanese entry in the TV category of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2020.

The original work, "Sinking of Japan," is a science fiction novel published by Sakyo Komatsu in 1973, which became a bestseller with a total of 4.7 million copies sold. A live-action film was released in the same year, recording 2.82 billion yen in distribution revenue. It was later adapted into a movie in 2006, starring Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and Kou Shibasaki, which was also a big hit, grossing 5.34 billion yen at the box office. This time, Masaaki Yuasa, known for his unique style, will direct the animated version.

The film is set in Japan in the year 2020, just after the completion of the Tokyo Olympics, a major national project. A major earthquake suddenly strikes Japan. Ayumu (Ayumu) and Go (Go), a sister and brother of the Muto family, an ordinary family living in Tokyo, begin to escape from Tokyo amidst the chaos, but the ever-sinking Japanese islands relentlessly hunt down the Muto family members. The Muto family is confronted with a choice between life and death, encounter and parting, in an extreme situation. In the face of this tremendous reality, the Muto siblings, Ayumi and Tsuyoshi, learn to believe in the future and develop the strength to survive. ......

The key visual of the film has now been unveiled. In one photo, the Mutoh family is lined up smiling, with Ayumi at the center of the picture, which is worn out in places. In the background, a shocking scene reminiscent of the immediate aftermath of the earthquake can be seen, but the picture held up by someone's hand is lit up by the azure sea, blue sky, and the sun, giving the visual a sense of hope beyond.

The film will also be the only Japanese entry in the TV section of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2020. This is the fifth time that a film by Yuasa has been nominated for this festival (the second time in the TV category); in 2017, "Dawn Tells Lou's Song" won the Annecy Film Festival's Crystal Prize (Grand Prix) in the feature film category.
