Netflix Original Anime "Sinking of Japan 2020" to be Distributed on July 9! Trailer & Additional Characters Revealed!

The Netflix original anime series "Sinking of Japan 2020" will be distributed exclusively worldwide from July 9, 2020 (Thursday). In addition, a trailer and information on additional characters and cast members have been released.

The original work, "Sinking of Japan," is a science fiction novel published in 1973 by Sakyo Komatsu, which became a bestseller with a total of 4.7 million copies sold. A live-action film was released in the same year, recording a distribution revenue of 2.82 billion yen. It was later adapted into a movie in 2006, starring Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and Kou Shibasaki, which was also a big hit, grossing 5.34 billion yen at the box office. This time, Masaaki Yuasa, known for his unique style, will direct the animated version.

The film is set in the year 2020 in Japan, which has just completed a major national project, the Tokyo Olympics. A major earthquake suddenly strikes Japan. Ayumu and Go, a sister and brother of the Muto family, an ordinary family living in Tokyo, begin to escape from Tokyo amidst the chaos, but the sinking Japanese islands are relentlessly hunting down the Muto family members. The Muto family is confronted with a choice between life and death, encounter and parting, in an extreme situation. In the face of this tremendous reality, the Muto siblings, Ayumi and Tsuyoshi, learn to believe in the future and develop the strength to survive. ......

The trailer for "Sinking of Japan 2020" begins with a scene of a sudden earthquake that struck Japan one day, and depicts the sinking Japanese islands and the people who are being hunted down.

Character and Cast Information Revealed

Four additional characters have been announced this time. Haruo Koga (CV: Hiroyuki Yoshino), the only son of the Koga family, who lives in a house next door to the Muto family; Nanami Miura (CV: Nanako Mori), a neighbor of the Muto family who is loved by Ayumi like a sister; Kite (CV: Kensho Ono), a You Tuber with over 7 million registered viewers; and Hikita Kunio (CV: Kunio Hikita), a store owner in a supermarket in the suburbs. (CV: Umeji Sasaki), a supermarket owner in the suburbs.

Ayumi Muto (CV: Rena Ueda)
14 years old, junior high school student, born in Tokyo. She is the eldest daughter of the Muto family. She is a member of the junior high school track team and is expected to be a candidate for the national team. She is in her adolescence and feels annoyed by her mother's caring nature.

Tsuyoshi Muto (CV: Tomo Muranaka)
8 years old, 2nd grade elementary school student, born in Tokyo. He is the eldest son of the Muto family. He is obsessed with online games and dreams of competing in the Olympics in e-sports. His dream is to move to Estonia, a leading IT country.

Mari Muto (CV: Yuko Sasaki)
42 years old, from the Philippines, real name is Marie Torres Muto, mother of Ayumi and Tsuyoshi. She was a competitive swimmer in her youth. After retiring, she works for a resort hotel and travels around the world. Her hobbies are sports in general and photography.

Koichiro Muto (CV: Masaki Terasoma)
He is 44 years old and was born in Tokyo. He works as a lighting technician at a stage production company. He is a dynamic and dependable person who is the mainstay of the family. He is especially respected by Tsuyoshi as a hero who can do anything. He is a family-oriented father.

Haruo Koga (CV: Hiroyuki Yoshino)
17 years old, mother and child. He is the only son of the Koga family and lives in a house next door to the Muto family. He used to be an ace on the track and field team, but he has stopped running and has become a recluse due to a slump. His hobby is collecting records.

Nanami Miura (CV: Nanako Mori)
She is 26 years old, single, and works as a personal trainer. In addition to being a personal trainer, she also works at an osteopathic clinic. She lives near the Muto family and is loved by Ayumi like an older sister. Her hobby is martial arts.

Kite (CV: Kensho Ono)
18 years old, born in Tokyo. He is a YouTube star with over 7 million subscribers. He ventures into unexplored and dangerous areas around the world and uploads aerial videos taken by paramotors. He is a free spirit, optimistic and confident.

Kunio Hikita (CV: Umeji Sasaki)
He is 78 years old. He owns a supermarket in the suburbs. Lives alone in a house behind the supermarket. His favorite car is a Ford truck. He is an expert archer, having won a national archery competition when he was a student.

It was also decided that "Sinking of Japan 2020 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK" will be released on August 26, 2020. The price is 3,500 yen (excluding tax).


Masaaki Yuasa, the director of the film, and Kensuke Ushio, who also composed the music for "Ping Pong the Animation" and "Devilman crybaby," have teamed up again. The album will include 41 gems of music that will create a world full of tension.
